Eye on Asia: Awakening To A Nightmare!
The June 2019 edition of ASIAN GOLF is out!
With slightly over five months to go before the 13th staging of the 2019 Asia Pacific Golf Summit (APGS 2019), ASIAN GOLF will be placing special focus on the key topics that will be discussed at this annual golf conference.
The golf industry is fast approaching a point when it is going to awaken from a glorious dream of the good times of the post-war era and be confronted face-on by the impending nightmare of the hard, charging age of the Millennials!
Most of us have read about the Millennial period; many of us have discussed it at length and then again, many more have just not given a hoot to the changing of the guard – from the Post War Generation of baby boomers to the emerging new market of Millennials.
This lackadaisical attitude is perhaps most prevalent in the golf industry which is already paying the price of a global decline in its business. This nightmare was portended by the American market research guru Matt Powell of NPD Group when he warned: “There are a lot of systemic headwinds for golf that are just not going away – in particular: Millennials are not picking up the game as quickly as Boomers are ageing out of it. The game needs young people to be playing it to reverse its fortunes. I don’t think a 43-year-old guy (Tiger Woods) winning a golf tournament is going to inspire young people to get out and pick up the game.” How profoundly stated by a man who has the training, breeding, intellect and vision to see the writings on the wall! The challenge posed to golf by the Millennials is a serious one, but all is not lost, yet!
ASIAN GOLF has been highlighting this challenge for a few years and with the 2019 Asia Pacific Golf Summit coming up in India (November 4 – 6), we have decided to grab the bull by the horns again and to grapple it down with the help of golf’s famed Legendary Marketing Guru, Andrew Wood.
The Summit will be staged on November 4 – 6 in the futuristic Indian city of Gurugram and the venue will be the multi-award winning DLF Golf and Country Club.
