ORIGINAL “MR. 59” AL GEIBERGER VISITS GARMANY GOLF AT PGA SHOW

First player to break 60 on PGA Tour made history with a hot putter in 100-degree heat

AUSTIN, Texas (Jan. 23, 2019) – Golf legend Al Geiberger, the original “Mr. 59,” will make a special appearance Thursday, Jan. 24, from 2-4 p.m. at the Garmany Golf booth (No. 3479) in the Travel Pavilion.

Geiberger, now 81, became the first player to break 60 on the PGA Tour when he posted his famous 59 in the second round of the 1977 Danny Thomas Memphis Classic, which he went on to win. Geiberger, who captured the 1966 PGA Championship, won 11 times on the PGA Tour and 10 times on the PGA Tour Champions, with 30 career victories total worldwide.

One of the most memorable rounds in golf history developed on Friday, June 10, 1977, at Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tenn. Playing in 100-degree weather, Geiberger shot 30 on the front nine and closed with a 29 on the back, making a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole to finish off the historic round.

Thanks to a hot putter – his shortest birdie putt of the day was from eight feet – Geiberger had 11 birdies and one eagle, with six pars, playing a seven-hole stretch 8-under.

Geiberger’s son John is Director of Collegiate Golf and International Experiences for Garmany Golf, a new division of the company that focuses on creating travel experiences for college golf teams, boosters and alumni to worldwide locations, as well as developing fundraising opportunities.
