Proper Hydration and Carb/Protein Diet Essential to Help Mature Golfers Improve Score
San Juan Capistrano, CA – The ten million mature golfers in Canada and the US sixty and over all face challenges in staying hydrated and maintaining their energy levels for all 18 holes. Those challenges are exacerbated if a round drags out to five hours or it’s a warm day or a friendly foursome likes to grab an alcoholic beverage or two on the back nine. The innate challenges of hitting a little 1.68” wide white ball into a 4.25” wide cup are significantly multiplied if accompanied by fuzziness or fatigue or worst. Which is why the latest Fore! Sixty podcast with golf nutrition expert and author of The Sports Nutrition Playbook, registered dietitian Amy Goodson, hosted by Fore! Sixty Golf’s Jim Plumb, is so important.
In the twenty-minute podcast Amy discusses the importance of a nutritionally complete breakfast before a round of golf, which ideally includes a combination of high-fiber carbohydrates and lean protein; think oatmeal or whole grain bread with a side of eggs and fruit. A complete breakfast is important to keep your blood sugar, and energy levels, stable for the next several hours as you play the front nine. Amy also talks about the need for the right snack at the turn to help avoid the “dreaded back nine fatigue” mature golfers often confront. “This snack should include a carbohydrate and a protein like a granola bar and beef jerky, trail mix or a nut-based protein bar. These are simple snacks golfers can keep in their bag and snack on throughout the round to help keep their energy levels up,” says Amy. And while golf’s leading nutrition expert confide that one beer might not be a game-breaker, a second beer should be avoided at all costs.

Another key issue discussed is the importance of hydration. Dehydration, or not drinking enough fluid, can have many negative side effects and can cause more than just shanking a drive or missing a three-foot putt. Golf may not be an intense sport, but it is an enduring one of four-five hours. This places the premium on drinking sufficient water throughout the round and avoiding sugary drinks. The longer the round and the higher the temperature, the greater the need to indulge in enough H2O.
This latest Fore! Sixty podcast on nutrition for mature golfers is the most recent example of our holistic approach to enhancing the game for the ten million US and Canadian golfers sixty and over. This includes dealing with some of the more prevalent age relevant challenges including arthritis, back and joint pain, sun protection and diabetes. Additional episodes and guests include the father of golf metrics, US Golf Labs Gene Parente, Gavin Dear, Managing Director of golf shot aggregator Shot Scope, and Katherine Roberts author of Yoga for Golfers. The podcasts are hosted by Fore! Sixty’s Jim Plumb and include mid-segment golf tips by Fore! Sixty’s resident Hall of Fame Teaching Pro Mike Wydra. Each audio segment is about twenty minutes long and are now available free on leading podcast platforms including Stitcher, Spotify, Google Podcasts and Apple podcasts.
