French Lick Resort Awarded “Top 100 Resorts in North America” Distinction by GOLF Magazine
Acclaimed Dye and Ross Courses Anchor a “Classic-Meets-Modern” Golf Experience Like No Other
French Lick Resort, Southern Indiana’s iconic golf and vacation destination and home to two of the state’s most lauded golf courses, has been awarded “2019 Top 100 Resorts in North America” honors by GOLF Magazine. Restored to its historic glory, French Lick Resort is home to the expansive and captivating West Baden Springs Hotel, French Lick Springs Hotel and French Lick Casino, as well as two top-ranked public layouts, The Pete Dye Course at French Lick and The Donald Ross Course at French Lick.
GOLF‘s first-ever ranking of the Top 100 Resorts appears in the October 2019 edition of the print magazine and online at GOLF.com. Under the expert guidance of industry veterans, travel writers, GOLF.com readers, and GOLF’s Top 100 panelists and editorial teams, resorts were rated on five key variables: golf experience, accommodations, service, food, and ambience, then placed into four experience categories: Luxury, Buddies, General Excellence and Families.
French Lick Resort, although selected among the Family category has become a leading destination for buddies. With a sweeping array of guest attractions, including spa, pool area or area activities such as private hunting and fishing experiences, a shooting range, or testing luck in the casino. In the evenings the group can experience a variety of fine dining options at each hotel, or head into the town of French Lick and check out the likes of Brick 33, which is named after its beloved basketball son, Larry Bird.
“We are very excited to be honored among the Top 100 Resorts by GOLF Magazine,” Dave Harner, French Lick’s director of golf said. “French Lick has become one of the most complete golf destination experiences in the country. World-class golf is really just the beginning of one of the most unforgettable golf vacations that buddies’ groups, or families can have in the Midwest.”
Situated in the rolling hills of Southern Indiana, French Lick Resort features over 700 guest rooms and suites; a 51,000-square-foot casino; meeting and event space totaling 163,000 square feet; 45-holes of award-winning golf; two full-service spas with a combined 36 treatment rooms; and an array of fine dining and family-friendly entertainment and recreation options.
Thanks in large part to Indiana natives and philanthropists Bill and Gayle Cook and Cook Medical, a $600 million investment revitalized the region and created a modern luxury experience with historic charm. Today, the resort spreads across 3,000 acres, boasts two world-class hotels, French Lick Springs and the West Baden Springs, which have been fully restored to their original sophistication and luxury.
Since the early 1900’s, golf has been an integral part of this resort area. Tom Bendelow designed the first course here in 1907 followed by the great Donald Ross ten years later. In 2009, Pete Dye created a visually stunning masterpiece, which has quickly become one of the most highly acclaimed courses in the country. Both courses are ranked among the Top 100 in America’s Greatest Public Courses and are currently ranked as the No. 1 and 2 Courses You Can Play in Indiana.
The Pete Dye course achieved a rare double honor in 2009 by being selected as America’s best new course by the two leading golf publications in the country – Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine. It is located on a dramatic hilltop, which is one of the highest points in the state of Indiana and offers panoramic views of the Hoosier National Forest that stretch as far as 40 miles. This month, the Dye course will host the legends of the game with the Senior LPGA Championship October 14-16, televised on Golf Channel each day from 3-6 PM.
As for the historic Donald Ross course, it underwent a $4.6 million restoration project that brought the course back to Ross’s original genius plans. It is a parkland gem that meanders up and down the rolling hills a few miles from the main resort. It was site of the 1924 PGA Championship won by the legendary Walter Hagen and has hosted other golf greats and celebrities including Gene Sarazen, Chick Evans, and Bing Crosby.
