Scottsdale, Ariz. – Soon after Sarah Gallagher hoisted the 2023 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship trophy last week at Troon Country Club, following her 1-up victory over Corrie Kuehn, the venerable Scottsdale private club began turning its attention to hosting it’s next USGA Championship, the 44th U.S. Mid-Amateur in September 2025.
The 61st U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship was played September 30 – October 5 and featured a field of 132 golfers age 50 and above. Making her first appearance in the Championship, Gallagher, 50, of Canton, Georgia, outlasted Kuehn, of Asheville, North Carolina, 1-up to win the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur title. Gallagher shot rounds of 75 and 78 to finish in a tie for seventh during the stroke play portion of the competition, then proceeded to be up or even in 101 of the 104 holes she played in match play. For winning the Championship, Gallagher receives a gold medal, custody of the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Trophy for one year, a 10-year exemption into the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur, and an exemption into the 2024 U.S. Women’s Amateur at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In addition, she will also receive two-year exemptions into the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur (2024 and 2025) and U.S. Senior Women’s Open (2024 and 2025).
Troon Country Club Superintendent Seth Miller and his 25-person grounds crew received praise from competitors for providing superb course conditions, especially on the greens, during the Championship.
“It was a tremendous week for our Club as we shared the superior course conditions and unmatched hospitality that is the hallmark of our member experience,” said Garrett Wallace, chief operating officer and general manager, Troon Country Club. “A special thank you to our TCC team, our Host Committee, the 179 volunteers and our generous supporters who worked to deliver an amazing Championship. We are thrilled to have Sarah as our champion and will build on the momentum from this year’s U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur as we look ahead to the 2025 U.S. Mid-Amateur and crowning a third USGA National Champion at TCC.”
Scheduled for September 13 – 18, 2025, the 44th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship will be played at Troon Country Club and nearby Troon North Golf Club. The U.S. Mid-Amateur is open to amateur golfers age 25 years and older who’s Handicap Index® does not exceed 3.4. The 264 competitors will play two rounds of stroke play, one at Troon North Golf Club and one at Troon Country Club, with the low 64 advancing to match play at Troon Country Club. Match play rounds of 64 golfers, 32, 16, 8 and 4 will lead to the 36-hole Mid-Amateur Championship between the finalists.
The state of Arizona has now hosted 17 USGA Championships at 11 host sites. Before the 2023 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, the last USGA Championship held in Arizona was in 2019 when the Women’s Mid-Amateur was played at Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff. And, the last USGA Championship held in the Metro Phoenix area was the 2007 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur at Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree.
Troon Country Club is a Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf-design that originally opened for play in 1986. In 2020, the course underwent a $4.6 million dollar, seven-month-long renovation led by Weiskopf and design consultant Phil Smith. Troon Country Club hosted the 1990 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, won by Jim Stuart 1-up over Mark Sollenberger, who was a three-time Arizona State Amateur champion; member of the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame; and attended Arizona State University. Current Troon Country Club member Dan Belden also competed in the 1990 Championship.
