NEW YORK, NY – RG.org recently published an exclusive interview with nine-time major champion Gary Player, offering unprecedented insights into Rory McIlroy’s career Grand Slam achievement and Player’s lifetime of Masters memories.
In the wide-ranging conversation with PGA Professional Brendon Elliott, RG’s Lead Golf Writer, the 89-year-old South African legend shared his thoughts on McIlroy’s long-awaited Masters victory, declaring emphatically, “It was Rory’s time.”
“I’ve always said he has the talent to win the Masters and the best swing in the professional game today,” Player told Elliott. “All young, aspiring professionals and juniors should look to Rory’s swing as a model.”
Player, who became the first non-American to win at Augusta National in 1961, expressed particular admiration for McIlroy’s perseverance through his 11-year quest to complete the career Grand Slam.
“I was absolutely thrilled to see him finally slip on that green jacket,” Player said. “No doubt he had to earn it and did so by overcoming adversity.”
The article, titled “‘It Was Rory’s Time’: Gary Player Reflects on McIlroy’s Grand Slam and a Lifetime of Masters Memories,” also explores Player’s deep connection to Augusta National, including his cherished role as an honorary starter.
“The word that comes to mind is gratitude, as this is a great honor in my life,” Player said of his ceremonial duties. “Every year, I don’t take a single swing or step on that tee for granted. I warm up for that one shot just as if I was playing in the tournament.”
Player also shared heartwarming reflections on the Par 3 Contest, which took on special significance this year as his great-grandchildren joined him as caddies for the first time.
“There aren’t many, if any, occasions in sport that are like the Par 3 Contest,” Player noted. “It reminds us that golf is not just about trophies and competition, but about love, legacy, and connection.”
With 52 Masters appearances and three green jackets to his name, Player’s perspective offers a unique bridge between golf’s storied past and its promising future. His appreciation for both the traditions he helped establish and the new champions who carry them forward demonstrates the beautiful continuity of the sport.
