During These Trying Times, Golf Can Provide An Escape, With Proper Precautions
LAS VEGAS, NV – While the coronavirus pandemic has turned our lives upside down, the sport of golf can provide an escape from the stress if courses take the proper precautions.
“Our sport can allow people an opportunity to ease the stress of these trying times, if the proper precautions are taken,” said Mickey Brown, CEO of Pro Turf International, a golf course maintenance, construction, renovation and landscaping company based in Las Vegas. “It allows people to be outdoors, to be with their friends and family and to get some exercise in a safe environment. But proper steps must be taken by golf courses to insure the safety of their customers.”
One such step is to require players to putt with the flagstick left in the hole, eliminating the need to touch the flagstick. PTI has taken that a step further at one of their client courses, Coral Mountain Golf Club in La Quinta, CA. They have inverted the level of the cup so the ball sits up higher when a putt is holed out, making it easier to get the ball out of the hole with less touching of the surfaces.
Some courses are going even further by raising the cup an inch above ground. A putt is considered holed when the ball strikes the cup.
Another good tip is taking away bunker rakes, instituting a lift, clean and place rule in the bunkers so players do not have to handle rakes. They can instead “rake” the bunkers with their feet. Also, cover or take away ball washers.
Courses should also wipe down carts with sanitizer or warm water and soap prior to and after rounds. And when possible, allow players to go solo in carts. Pencils and sand bottles should be taken off carts.
Players should also institute the proper hygiene techniques they do around their homes, washing their hands or using hand sanitizer as often as possible during play.
So as long as your local or state government says it is okay, get out and play some golf during these challenging times.
