Black Hills Course Earns Top Spot for the First Time
Rapid City, South Dakota – Set in a scenic valley not far from Mt. Rushmore in the rolling Black Hills, local and traveling golfers can now play the No. 1 ranked golf course in South Dakota, according to Golfweek’s Best raters.
Hart Ranch Golf Club is ranked No. 1 in South Dakota in Golfweek’s 2023 Best Courses You Can Play list for the top public-access layouts in each state as judged by the magazine’s nationwide network of raters. While consistently lauded by local golfers and tourists visiting Mt. Rushmore, this is the first time Hart Ranch has garnered the top spot. Recognized for its natural beauty, the 18-hole, par 72 course meanders through 293 acres of undulating topography complemented by rock outcroppings and native vegetation. The course features meticulously maintained bentgrass putting greens, narrow, well-bunkered fairways and rough reminiscent of the broader prairie landscape.

Developed by the Hart Ranch Development Company and owned by the Duininck family in Wilmar, MN, the first nine holes were carved out of a working 13,067 acre cattle ranch in 1985, with the second nine holes added in 1995. After expanding to 18 holes, Hart Ranch has hosted numerous regional Black Hills tournaments and South Dakota State Championship events. It has consistently been recognized in various golf publications as a premier golf course in the Black Hills region and the entire state of South Dakota.
