HIGHLAND PARK GOLF COURSE REOPENS FOLLOWING RENOVATION
Birmingham, Ala. (March 4, 2020) – Highland Park Golf Course in Birmingham, Alabama, the state’s oldest public golf course, reopened for play on March 2nd following a seven-month golf course renovation project. Renovation work began in August and included modernization of golf course bunkers and putting surfaces. Landscapes Unlimited oversaw the renovation.
Modernization of Highland Park’s bunkers included rebuilding bunkers using the Better Billy BunkerTM method which provides a technically advanced drainage and liner system, while providing optimal playing conditions much deeper into the life of the bunker. Top golf courses around the nation including Hazeltine National, Sage Valley and Muirfield Village have adopted the Better Billy Bunkers.
All 18 greens as well as the practice green were rebuilt and resurfaced with an AU Victory Bentgrass to provide guests with a smoother, faster and more consistent putting surface. The bentgrass was developed by Auburn University’s Turfgrass Research Team and thrives in the high humidity and heat of the region.
The renovation project was done in partnership with the City of Birmingham, the Birmingham Parks & Recreation Department and Honours Golf, Highland Park’s management company.
“We’re excited to debut the newly renovated golf course to our loyal patrons,” said Highland Park Golf Course’s Director of Golf Evan Godfrey, PGA. “The public/private partnership with City of Birmingham and Honours Golf is outstanding and allowed this project to come together and flourish.”
This spring and summer, Highland Park will host happy hour golf clinics, Get Golf Ready clinics and junior summer camps on the practice range as well as Thursday afternoon golf leagues on the golf course. The course also offers a variety of 9 and 18-hole rates to fit most any budget. For more information or to register for the clinics, camps or leagues, visit http://www.highlandparkgolf.com.
