Hello golf stakeholders:
Welcome to 2024; we hope that all of you had a festive, safe and enjoyable ringing in of the new year. Unlike many years in golf between ’00-’19, where we were happy to close the book on the outgoing year, as you’ll see in this issue, ‘23 was a trend we’d love to see continue in ’24.
Contributing Editor Stuart Lindsay warms up for the qualitative portion of the upcoming State of the Industry (SoI) with his leading article on the inversion of circumstances between the industry of golf and the golf media sector (Tours and industry organizations which own tournaments). Unlike years prior where the industry was in decline/turmoil and the media folks were “riding above the storm” it’s now a period where those of us in the trenches are doing well and the “big boys” are creating unending (unnecessary?) drama and shooting themselves and others in the foot weekly.
Publisher Jim K. confirms that his November call regarding records falling in ’23 for Golf Revenue, Rounds and Rate held up through December but then, always the analyst, asks the nagging question of “Why?” Given that the industry hasn’t “solved” any of the three stated barriers of playing/playing more, it’s a legit question.
See below for the headlines to each of our recurring sections from the regional December weather impact map to Comings & Goings (very few but…December). We’ve already compiled the December rounds “preview”, courtesy of our GMRC first-responders, and it suggests that Golf Revenue and Rounds did indeed follow the extraordinary December weather upward (although we couldn’t match it). If you want to know those numbers on a regular basis, you can either participate in GMRC(course operators) or sign up for a Publications Membership (everyone else).
