During the course of a 30-year writing career, his work has earned awards from the USGA and other industry organizations. In 2006, he was the Louis D. Rubin Jr. writer-in-residence at Hollins University in Virginia. Dodson is a distinguished alumnus of East Carolina University.
Dodson has been a prolific author. Among his most notable books are Final Rounds (1996), The Dewsweepers (2001) and A Golfer’s Life (with Arnold Palmer). He has twice won the Herbert Warren Wind/USGA International Book Award – in 2004 for Ben Hogan, An American Life and in 2012 for American Triumvirate: Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, and the Modern Age of Golf, which inspired a documentary by Golf Channel with a script written by Dodson.
