The Red Label finished Runner Up at the First Major after a valiant effort that came up just 1 stroke short in a playoff. The KBS Player showed determination throughout the whole round to get into the playoff. Even in defeat the 44-year-old showed pure class and sportsmanship that will be mentioned for years to come. He had KBS C-Taper 125X shafts in his Muira irons. The 44-year-old is a veteran on Tour and is always a threat in the majors. He started off the event with an impressive 65 to take the lead. The next round he shot a steady score of 71, but struggled the next day with a round of 75 to drop down the leaderboard. Finals day at the first major can go anyone’s way. The pressure and what’s at stake rattle the best players year after year. His front nine was full of ups and downs, he would make a birdie to gain momentum, but then have costly bogeys to remain far down the leaderboard. He would have to play lights out on the back nine to have any chance at catching the leader.
He went on to make 3 birdies in a row on 3 of the first 4 holes. A costly bogey on the 14th hole was quickly forgotten with back-to-back birdies on the next two holes. Another unfortunate bogey on the 17th left him needing a birdie and a miracle on the last hole to force a playoff. The 44-year-old hit two impressive shots on the last hole to give himself a lengthy putt for birdie. He went on to drain the putt and had the crowd in the frenzy. The KBS players chances at the victory were cut short on the first playoff hole after his opponent made birdie to beat him by one stroke. He was gracious in defeat and showed pure class. He said, “Yeah, it hurts. What do you choose to dwell on, you know what I mean? There’s no point in being too despondent about it”. A huge congratulations goes out the Runner Up and the rest of the KBS players in the field at the First Major! | Player Driven. Tour Proven. |
