(Denver, CO) GOLFTEC, the world leader in golf improvement and club fitting, and Global Golf Post, revisit Coach Jamie Kureluk’s historic ‘25’ score eleven years to the day it happened.
On May 25th, 2010, GOLFTEC Coach Jamie Kureluk became ‘Mr. 25’ with his world record-setting nine-hole score at the Alberta Open. In an exclusive interview with Global Golf Post, Kureluk talks about that history-making round and how it came to be.
“I was aware that things were going extremely well, said Kureluk, Center Manager at GOLFTEC Calgary Midnapore. “I tried adding up the score on 17, the overall score for the round and I kind of lost track of it. I knew it was enough under par (to win), but I didn’t know it was a world record at the time.”
Kureluk posted seven birdies and two eagles in the final nine holes at Carnmoney Golf Club, on his way to a 61 in the first round of the Alberta Open, securing his place in history as ‘Mr. 25’. But it was his approach on 18 that sticks with him today. “I had an awkward lie from 197 with a 5-iron with the ball a foot below my feet in the fescue.” Kureluk stuck the shot to two feet for an eagle.
Now the Center Manager for GOLFTEC Calgary Midnapore, Kureluk is focused on helping others play better golf. “I’m a better teacher than player now.” A Class A member of the PGA of Canada, Kureluk leads a team of PGA of Canada members teaching students every day. “We all go through extensive training focused on providing the best instruction possible.”
But his record-setting win is a source of pride for Kureluk, and for the local golf community. “People in the city know about it. There’s a scorecard here at the shop.” A replica is also on the wall at Carnmoney Golf Club, and the original scorecard is in the possession of Alberta Golf. “I say that on May 25, I shot a 25.”
