Week kicks off with Mesa Public Schools Junior Clinic sponsored by Mesa Hohokams
For the 16th consecutive year, Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz. will host the American Junior Golf Association PING Heather Farr Classic, April 16-21. A premier event on the American Junior Golf Association schedule, the 54-hole stroke play competition will feature 132 of the top junior golfers in America in both the Boys and Girls Divisions.
Past boys champions of the AJGA PING Heather Farr Classic, include PGA TOUR star Hunter Mahan, Beau Hossler, Philip Francis, and Drew Kittleson. Past girls champions include many LPGA players, including Amanda Blumenherst, Paula Creamer, Alison Lee, Inbee Park, Mina Harigae, and Moriya Jutanugarn. Hannah O’Sullivan was the 2015 Heather Farr Classic champion and is currently playing collegiate golf at Duke University.
The AJGA PING Heather Farr Classic is named in honor of the late Heather Farr. Born and raised in Arizona, Farr played collegiate golf at Arizona State University and had victories in the U.S. Girls Junior and the USGA Women’s Amateur Public Links. She was a Curtis Cup team member and broke onto the LPGA Tour in 1986. At the age of 24, Farr was diagnosed with breast cancer, and ultimately died from the disease when she was just 28. The event honors her spirit, courage and tenacity.
To begin the AJGA PING Heather Farr Classic tournament week, Longbow Golf Club will host the Mesa Public Schools Junior Clinic sponsored by Mesa Hohokams on Tuesday, April 16. Fifth and sixth-grade students from three Mesa elementary schools will be transported to the course with more than thirty teachers and administrators for an educational and grow-the-game themed event. The Junior Clinic will include a Peter Longo trick shot show, golf-themed games by The First Tee of Phoenix, a photo booth, free tee shirts and hats, and lunch on the event lawn.
“We are truly honored to play host to not only some of Arizona’s best junior golfers but also some of the best in the world representing 21 states and 8 foreign countries here at Longbow Golf Club for the annual AJGA PING Heather Farr Classic,” said Bob McNichols, developer of Longbow Business Park and Golf Club. “One of the highlights of the week will certainly be our Mesa Public Schools Clinic which will introduce area youth to the game. This community outreach event was started by Longbow Golf Club in 2010 and has been repeated 27 times, providing more than 8,000 kids with an opportunity to learn the game over the past nine years.”
