LOS CABOS WELCOMES NOBU HOTEL
Oasis of serenity on Pacific Ocean offers exclusive access to Diamante’s golf courses
Created by Japanese celebrity Chef “Nobu” Matsuhisa and Academy Award-winning actor, director and producer Robert De Niro, Nobu Hotel Los Cabos, an elegant 200-room hotel opened in April, blends contemporary Japanese minimalism with locally sourced Mexican materials. It is the first Nobu Hotel in Mexico and the ninth to open worldwide.
Drawing inspiration from a simple but sophisticated palette that embraces the Japanese aesthetic of the Nobu brand, the low-rise, white-washed hotel, set back from a pristine stretch of beach fronting the Pacific Ocean, fuses architectural elegance and laid-back Cabo luxury.
“We are very excited that the first Nobu Hotel in Mexico has opened its doors in Los Cabos,” said Alberto Selas, General Manager. “Nobu has truly set itself apart by providing remarkable hospitality and luxury lifestyle experiences from its incomparable food and beverage to its cutting-edge design.”
The hotel’s 103 suites (in four configurations) and 97 deluxe guest rooms (golf view, ocean view and swim-up ocean view) are a study in understated luxury. In addition to exclusive Nobu beds with high thread count and organic cotton linens, guest rooms feature double vanities with Italian stone finishes, a soaking tub made from teak, and a walk-in shower flanked by a high wall of smooth, hand-set stones. Bathroom amenities feature a white tea essence made exclusively for the Nobu brand. Private balconies have comfortable lounge furniture, artwork is locally sourced, and a traditional Japanese tea set complements the Nespresso machine.
In addition to a range of cabanas, including four “super cabanas” equipped with day bed, living area, full bathroom and TV, the hotel has four pools. Two of them are pale blue, evoking the Sea of Cortez. Two are deep blue, replicating the color of the Pacific Ocean.
Guests of Nobu Hotel, set within the 1,500-acre resort community of Diamante Cabo San Lucas, have exclusive access to the club’s otherwise-private golf courses.
The Dunes Course, a Davis Love III design opened to acclaim in 2010, is a spectacular layout carved into massive sand hills perched above the Pacific. This windswept, lay-of-the-land links, in view from the hotel’s golf view rooms, rambles through 50-foot dunes and skirts huge blowout bunkers in its journey to and from the sea. Breaching whales are a common sight from the fairways during the winter months. The Dunes Course is a fixture on Golf Digest’s “World 100 Greatest Golf Courses” list as well as Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 Courses in the World” roster.
Diamante’s El Cardonal, a strategic layout with an “Old California” design motif, marked the architectural debut of superstar Tiger Woods when it opened in 2014. Featuring panoramic ocean views, the course meanders through sand dunes on the outgoing holes and climbs to higher ground on the back nine, where several winding arroyos crisscross the fairways. With its wide landing areas and open-entry greens, El Cardonal, while Tiger-tough from the tips, was designed to accommodate players at all ability levels.
The club’s Oasis Short Course, a versatile 12-hole, par-3 layout designed by Tiger Woods, features par 3’s ranging from 41 to 143 yards. This mini-links can also play as a three-hole loop featuring a 374-yard par 4, a 143-yard par 3 and a 540-yard par 5. The layout, which weaves past 400 palm trees and a large lake, enjoys a lovely oasis-like setting.
“It is a great privilege to be able to offer our guests exclusive access to Diamante’s golf courses, which are some of the best in Mexico,” Selas stated. “Having the capability to offer this experience really adds value to avid golfers who choose to stay with us at our hotel.”
The hotel’s culinary lodestar is its signature Nobu Restaurant. Classically trained in Tokyo and influenced by his time abroad in Peru, Chef Nobu Matsuhisa continues to set the pace for new-style Japanese cuisine. The eclectic menu features dishes found in other Nobu restaurants worldwide (such as rock shrimp tempura and miso black cod) as well as dishes created especially for his gastronomic outpost in Los Cabos. The open-air restaurant, oriented to the ocean, is adorned with gold cherry blossom décor, washi paper art and traditional Japanese lanterns. A large square bar with tall glass walls adjoins the restaurant and serves boldly flavored cocktails.
