Scottsdale, Ariz.  – Lou’s Bar & Grill at Papago Golf Club recently welcomed Charles Kassels as Executive Chef as the popular Phoenix restaurant continues to elevate its culinary profile.

Kassels has over 30 years of fine dining, resort and off-premises catering experience. He most recently served as manager of the award-winning Little Miss BBQ in Phoenix. A graduate of Arizona State University, Kassel formalized his culinary education by attending the Culinary Institute of America in New York. After graduation from culinary school, he moved back to Scottsdale where he worked at the Boulders Resort alongside James Beard Award-Winning Chef Charles Wiley. Seven years later, he was named Executive Chef at the famous Eldorado Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 2009, he returned to Phoenix to be the Executive Chef at the historic El Chorro Lodge. In 2017, he was named Executive Chef for Levy Restaurants at Gila River Arena.

Kassels’ menu at Lou’s Bar & Grill will showcase ingredient-driven cuisine featuring local artisans. He has already displayed his culinary gifts and experience, creating a diverse menu for both regulars and visitors, as well as showcasing his special event vision by preparing a variety of menus for group events and weddings at Lou’s, Evie’s Pavilion and Papago Golf Club.

“Chef Kassels has a wealth of knowledge and extensive background leading sizeable operations with multiple venues like ours,” said Papago General Manager, Daryl Crawford. “We are excited to welcome him and his culinary talents to Papago.”

In late 2018, through a public/private partnership between the City of Phoenix, Arizona State University and the Arizona Golf Community Foundation, Papago opened the state-of-the-art Lou Grubb Clubhouse, Lou’s Bar and Grill and Evie’s Pavilion, along with upgraded public practice facilities and a private practice facility for the Arizona State University men’s and women’s golf teams. The AGCF helped to secure funding for the project, which included a large donation from the Lou and Evelyn Grubb Foundation.

The layout of Lou’s Bar and Grill was designed to serve golfers and casual diners alike in a cool-clean, stone-and-steel atmosphere with open spaces that provide an inclusive, indoor-outdoor feel. The “al fresco” dining room and patio seating overlooking green lawns and golf course views provide a setting for small to medium-sized groups, and the adjacent enclosed event hall, Evie’s Pavilion, named after Lou’s wife Evelyn, can accommodate larger groups of up to 150 people.

About Papago Golf Club

Designed by William Francis “Billy” Bell, Papago Golf Course opened in 1963 as a crown jewel of the City of Phoenix’s municipal portfolio. It hosted the 1971 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, and helped develop some of Arizona’s most recognizable talent. In 2008, the par-72, 7,333-yard layout underwent a renovation to restore and enhance Bell’s original work in time to host the 2009 J Golf Phoenix LPGA International. And recently, through a public/private partnership between the City of Phoenix, Arizona State University and the Arizona Golf Community Foundation, the club opened the state-of-the-art Lou Grubb Clubhouse, Lou’s Bar and Grill and Evie’s Pavilion, along with upgraded public practice facilities and a private practice facility for ASU Golf teams. Papago sits on the borders of Phoenix, Tempe and Scottsdale, surrounded by the Papago Buttes less than two miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
