ORLANDO, Fla., – Marriott Golf, the Global Golf Division of Marriott International, Inc. today announced with profound appreciation that Claye Atcheson, Vice President, Global Golf Division, will retire in August. Claye helped grow Marriott International’s golf management portfolio from less than 10 golf courses to 45 golf courses in 13 countries – extending Marriott’s culture and hospitality into the golf experience for hotel guests and local golfers.
Forty-three years ago, while attending Arizona State University, Claye’s career with Marriott began at the Camelback Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ as a weekend player assistant. As Director of Golf, Claye opened both the Griffin Gate Golf Club in Lexington, KY, and the Golf Club at Fossil Creek in Ft. Worth, TX. During his time at Griffin Gate, the club hosted four PGA Senior Tour events during the early days of the PGA Senior Tour, now called the PGA Champions Tour. After Fossil Creek, Claye was the Director of Golf at Camelback Golf Club.
Claye moved to headquarters to join the newly formed Marriott Golf Corporate team in 1990. He played a key role in the integration and development of brand standards for golf resorts with the acquisitions of Renaissance, The Ritz-Carlton, MVCI, Gaylord Hotels and Starwood brands as well as the stand-alone golf management contract business. Claye developed the Marriott Golf Family Golf Festival concept, a local community introductory program that the golf properties have been executing for over 20 years.
He is an industry leader, holding national board positions with the PGA of America and the National Golf Course Owners Association. He counts playing golf with both J.W. Marriott, Sr. and J.W. Marriott, Jr. as one of his best memories. Claye and Patti, his wife of 42 years, look forward to more time with their grandchildren – ages 1 to 9 years old. They’ll also be giving back to the community through work with the Feed America and Meals on Wheels programs and beach and wildlife preservation on Florida’s emerald coast state parks.
We thank Claye for his lasting legacy on the golf program at Marriott International and wish him all the best in his retirement.
