MAY PERSPECTIVE – DON’T TAKE YOUR EYE OFF THE “MAINTENANCE BALL”

May 15, 2025

Hello golf stakeholders:

As all eyes turn to Charlotte this weekend for the 2nd (likely soggy) major of the year, those in the golf operations sector are looking at the end of the pre-season and forward to the full-national ’25 golf season with a mix of anticipation and anxiety.

Contributing Editor Stuart Lindsay leads off with a nostalgic and light-hearted look at maintenance practices, fact and fiction while underlining the fact that failing to monitor and “ground” them annually comes at an owner/operator’s expense.  While the vast majority of the people, practices and investments in protecting your most important asset are rooted (bad pun) in integrity and earnestness, anytime human nature and money intersect you’re going to get shady behavior by at least a few.

Publisher Jim K. is supporting cast this month with his (latest) mini-rant on why buyers of/investors in golf course properties don’t either request or require independent, rigorous market analysis as a prerequisite from sellers or their intermediaries (listing agents, brokers etc.).  His crystal ball predicts that this will evolve over time the way the CARFAX model evolved in the pre-owned (euphemism for “used”) car sales market; from “interesting to see” to “required report.”

See below for the headlines to each of our recurring sections from the regional April weather impact (ouch, 4th consecutive down month to open the year) to By-the-Numbers which provides the March and Year-to-Date results for Rounds (off) and Utilization (up).  We’ve already compiled the April golf operations performance scorecard “preview”, courtesy of our Golf Market Research Center (GMRC) early-responders, and the sneak peek suggests that Rounds will again take a hit, but not as steep as the GPH drop which would produce another Utilization gain.  If you want to know those numbers on a regular basis, you can either participate in GMRC (course operators) or sign up for a Publications Membership (everyone else).

If you know of associates who would benefit from the topics and insights covered in this issue, feel free to forward this email and encourage them to register on the Pellucid website (http://www.pellucidcorp.com/news/elist) to join the discussion and healthy debate.
