2019 classes begin January 14th at McMaster University’s Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) in their online golf and resort management program. Online classes in Hospitality Management and Retail Management in Golf Operations start January 14th through March 10, 2019
Through its unique online delivery platform, McMaster University CCE prides itself on “bringing the business of golf to you,” for adult learners interested in a career in the golf industry. McMaster University CCE offers the only university diploma in Golf & Resort Management in Canada. Students who complete all ten courses will receive a Diploma in Golf & Resort Management from McMaster University and an industry certification from the Golf Management Institute of Canada (GMIC).
McMaster’s first course offering in 2019 is Hospitality Management. This course is tailor-made for the golf industry professional interested in learning the fundamentals of food and beverage management. Topics include inventory management, purchasing, menu preparation and budgeting and financial forecasting.
The course instructor is hospitality management expert Glenn Phillips. Prior to assuming the role of Director of Operations at ClubLink Corporation’s Greystone Golf Club in Milton, Ontario, Mr. Phillips served as ClubLink’s Regional Director of Hospitality, a position he held since 1999. In that role, he was responsible for all hospitality requirements for seven prestigious ClubLink properties: Glen Abbey, Heron Point, Blue Springs, Glencairn, Board of Trade, Eagle Ridge and the Lake Joseph Club. Prior to joining ClubLink, Mr. Phillips worked for the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA), where he served as the Clubhouse Manager at Glen Abbey GC for nine years. His industry expertise is extensive, having coordinated the hospitality requirements for 12 RBC Canadian Opens. The cost of the course is $689.00 CDN.
McMaster’s second course offering is Retail Management in Golf Operations. This course focuses on the successful management of a golf shop as an integral component of a golf facility’s overall operation. Topics such as seasonality, inventory management, customer identification and service, display techniques and pricing strategies and promotional ideas for generating additional revenues for the pro shop are the key topics of this course.
The course will be taught by retail expert Glenn Mills. Mr. Mills has spent most of his professional career in retail running big-box operations, having recently served as the general manager of Sport Chek in Toronto. For more than 10 years he worked with Golf Town, Canada’s largest golf retailer, where he built and ran the flagship store in Mississauga, taking on subsequent roles as regional manager, Director of Human Resources, Director of Training, Development & Recruitment, and Director of Facilities Management & Procurement. During his Golf Town tenure, he was instrumental in the company’s growth from 1 to 47 stores, and from 12 to 1,600 employees, with $350 million in annual sales. Mr. Mills’ progressive career has been combined with an executive-level education in HR, legal issues and organizational behaviour. He possesses superb purchasing and general management experience covering all areas of retail store operations. The cost of the course is $689.00 CDN.
