Stafford, Va. – The Maryland State Golf Association (MSGA) and Middle Atlantic PGA (MAPGA) are proud to announce a new team event – the Dolan Cup. Teams comprised of eight players representing the MSGA and the Maryland contingent of the MAPGA will face off in a friendly competition to determine the best team. The event is named after Columbia Country Club’s Professional Emeritus, Robert (Bob) Dolan Jr., PGA, who has been a fixture in Maryland golf for over 30 years.
The inaugural Dolan Cup Matches will be played on November 2, 2024, at Lakewood CC in Rockville, MD., with future matches taking place on even years, opposite the Middle Atlantic-GAP Mason-Dixon Matches.
“We are certainly thrilled to kick off this collaborative team event,” said MSGA Executive Director Kelly Newland, PGA. “We are even more pleased to be naming the event after Mr. Dolan, who has been a leading ambassador for amateur golf in Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region throughout his illustrious career.”
The MSGA team will feature 5 male mid-amateurs, 2 male seniors (50+), and 1 female while the MAPGA-Maryland team will feature 5 professionals from the Open division, 2 senior professionals (50+), and 1 female professional. Invitations will consider each respective organization’s Player of the Year standings as of October 7, along with additional factors determined by the Committee. The format will be Four-Ball matches in the morning, followed by Singles matches in the afternoon.
“Bob Dolan is a PGA of America and Middle Atlantic Section Hall of Fame Inductee,” stated MAPGA Executive Director Jon Guhl. “One of the many reasons for his inductions is his generous ongoing support of the Allied Golf Associations, in particular the MSGA. I can think of no better honor than to start a team match recognizing those who support both organizations, and to name that event after Bob Dolan.”
“I am thrilled to be honored by two organizations that have meant so much to me throughout my career,” said Bob Dolan, PGA. “These organizations do so much for the game, and I hope this event inspires players from both the MAPGA and the MSGA.”
