LAS VEGAS, NV – A bill passed by the Nevada Legislature and signed by Governor Steve Sisolak last summer can lead to rebates for those who take action in removing turf from their property.
Pro Turf International, a golf course maintenance, construction and landscaping company based in Las Vegas, can institute a plan to help navigate courses, communities and individuals through the complexities of the bill.
Bill AB356 states: An Act relating to water; prohibiting, with certain exceptions, the use of water from the Colorado River to irrigate nonfunctional turf on certain property; requiring the Board of Directors of the Southern Nevada Water Authority to develop a plan for the removal of nonfunctional turf on certain property; creating and setting forth the duties of the Nonfunctional Turf Removal Advisory Committee; requiring the Legislative Committee on Public Lands to conduct a study concerning water conservation; and providing other matters properly relating thereto.
“It is estimated that AB356 will remove approximately six square miles of turf, conserving enough to water the Las Vegas Strip for an entire year,” said Mickey Brown, CEO for Pro Turf International. “Water conservation efforts will take on even greater importance as the drought in the southwest U.S. intensifies, and it is only expected to worsen.”
It is predicted that about 35 percent of existing, nonfunctioning turf will be eliminated in the Las Vegas area. Nonfunctioning turf is the grass that is in-between roads, sidewalks and medians, and also is situated in front of businesses and communities. Anything for recreation is excused from the ban.
As the Las Vegas community has grown, the Southern Nevada Water Authority has prohibited developers from planting grass in front lawns, and has spent years offering residents and businesses up to $3 per square foot to remove thirsty, water-absorbing grass.
“Any interested homeowner, resident, business person can contact PTI directly for guidance and assistance with this law,” said Brown. “We will gladly help guide you throughout the process of applying for the rebate as well as designing and building your desert conversion project.”
