An Alabama Golf News Interview with Huntsville’s Nick Dunlap
HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA – As he prepares for next week’s U.S. Amateur at Oakmont Country Club, 2021 U.S. Junior Amateur winner Nick Dunlap says, simply, there is no perfection in golf.
“You can never perfect it. Pretty much every sport there is you can be perfect,” he told Alabama Golf News Editor Gregg Dewalt in a sit-down at his home course, the Canebrake Club in Huntsville,”
“You can hold a team to zero points or throw a no-hitter. You can bowl a perfect game. In golf, it’s impossible. I guess you can
birdie every hole, but that’s still not perfect. You can never get so good at it, and it’s super humbling as well,” Dunlap said.
The 17-year-old Alabama native, who has signed on to play at the University of Alabama, won the Junior Am on July 24 and hopes to continue a summer-long hot streak. In his last six starts, he won three times, took a pair of seconds and notched a fifth-place finish.
But that was as a junior. He recognizes the U.S. Amateur is a huge step up in competition, yet, he seems grounded and focused.
“I’d be lying if I said it didn’t add a little pressure, but in the end, it is still golf,” he said. “If you play your game and do what you are trying to do and execute, you are going to end up where you are going to end up. There will be more pressure as the level keeps getting higher, but it’s still just golf with a little bit bigger prize at the end.”
