Katherine Dobbie (Basking Ridge) and Landon Beirne (Manahawkin) Awarded $2,500 Annual Scholarship
Bedminster, N.J.…The New Jersey Golf Foundation (NJGF), the charitable arm of the New Jersey Section, PGA of America (NJPGA), announced Katherine Dobbie (Basking Ridge) and Landon Beirne (Manahawkin) as the 2022 recipients of the prestigious Peter A. Famiano Memorial Scholarship. Both Katherine and Landon were recognized at the 14th Annual New Jersey Golf Foundation Peter A. Famiano Memorial Pro-Am, on June 16th at Trump National Golf Club, in Bedminster, N.J.
Peter Famiano was the Head Golf Professional at Crestmont Country Club for over 35 years. In his honor, the NJGF created the Peter A. Famiano Memorial Scholarship, which recognizes worthy New Jersey junior golfers for their professionalism, integrity, volunteerism, and willingness to help others. The $2,500 annual scholarship is open to college students of any class year, provided they continue to meet the standards set forth by the NJGF Scholarship Committee. The Committee reviews all applications using the following criteria: scholarship achievement, qualities of character and leadership, financial need, volunteer history and future in golf.
Dobbie, a 2022 graduate of Ridge High School, was a member of the National Honor Society and an exceptional student-athlete who competed on the girl’s golf team for all four years. She was recognized with the Coaches Award for her passion, positive attitude and commitment to the team. To complement her golf game, Dobbie found a passion for volunteerism and helping others in many ways. From being an altar server and youth group challenge team leader at the Saint James Church, to volunteering at the Sunrise Senior Living Home, Dobbie learned so many valuable lessons, but, most importantly, she was captivated by the warm feeling of making a difference in someone’s life. Dobbie plans to continue her education this fall at Fairfield University, studying psychology with a hope to find new ways to implement her volunteer work through her learnings.
Beirne was also a successful student-athlete having captained the Southern Regional High School boy’s golf team for three years, and the boy’s soccer team for two years. Also a member of the National Honor Society, Beirne was recognized as Most Improved Golfer and received the Coaches Award for his commitment and incredible work ethic. Similar to Dobbie, Beirne also has a mindset to give back, and some of the organizations that he has volunteered for include, Student Team Building Youth Leadership Experience, David’s Dream, and the Believe Cancer Foundation, which was especially meaningful, as his younger sister was diagnosed with cancer years ago. Beirne has learned so much through volunteering on behalf of these important organizations that positively impact the lives of so many. Beirne will be attending the University of South Carolina to pursue a degree in Sports and Entertainment Management where he can continue to lend a helping hand to those in need.
