Oglebay Celebrates Junior Golf Growth
West Virginia High School Boy’s State Championships Held at Oglebay’s Speidel Golf Club
Oglebay – West Virginia’s most popular golf destination set amid the beautiful Appalachian foothills – celebrates the expansion of its First Tee of West Virginia and PGA Junior League youth golf programs.
Led by Head Golf Professional Shane Rice, The First Tee of West Virginia offers many programs to area youth at Oglebay. Participation at the resort increased by 150% in 2018, welcoming 126 new players.
“The future of golf is in the hands of our youth,” says Rice. “It is vital that we create a fun, positive and welcoming environment that equips young people with the knowledge needed to enjoy the game for a lifetime.”
Similarly, the PGA Junior League’s inaugural season at Oglebay was a success. The resort hosted multiple teams playing four 9-hole matches in two-person scrambles with coaching from PGA Professionals.
Rounding out the resort’s support of amateur golf, Oglebay hosted the West Virginia High School Boy’s Golf State Championships on Oct. 2 and 3. The season’s culminating competition was contested on the Jones Course at Oglebay’s Speidel Golf Club.
George Washington (AAA), Westside (AA) and Wheeling Central (A) won this year’s team state championships. Joseph Kalaskey (AAA – George Washington), Carson Proffitt (AA – PikeView) and Derrick Harrison (A – Wheeling Central) all took home individual medalist honors.
“Oglebay is always grateful to host events of this stature,” says Danny Ackerman, General Manager of Golf Operations. “We strive to continue leading the state in junior golf growth for years to come.”
The Jones Course previously hosted the West Virginia LPGA Classic for 11 years. Speidel’s Palmer Course, Oglebay’s second championship design, possesses all the characteristics of a modern resort course. The 18-hole regulation Crispin Course – Oglebay’s original design – and nine-hole, par-3 course are perfect for players of all skill levels.
Oglebay is one hour’s drive from Pittsburgh and easily accessible from Columbus, Charleston (W.V.), Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit and numerous Midwest and Northeast metropolitan areas.
