6Birmingham, Alabama (June 6, 2018) – Pine Tree Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama is playing host to the 102nd Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship, June 7 through 10, 2018. Pine Tree Country Club has hosted the prestigious tournament two times prior including in 1983 when Sam Farlow of Birmingham won, and in 1995 when Jason Brown of Decatur won.
“In 2018, we’re celebrating our 50th anniversary here at Pine Tree Country Club,” said Paul Whitman, PGA, director of golf, Pine Tree Country Club. “We are pleased to be hosting this prominent event as part of our anniversary celebration and we’re excited to watch the state’s best golfers tackle this golf course.”
A total of 156 golfers from across Alabama will compete in this year’s tournament. First round action begins at 7:30 am on Thursday and continue through Sunday with the second, third and fourth rounds. Taylor Eyster of Birmingham returns to defend his 2017 title won at Bent Brook Golf Club. The Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship was first played in 1915 at Montgomery Country Club in Montgomery, Ala. Jack Allison of Birmingham defeated Norborne R. Clarke 13 and 12 to win the inaugural event. The Championship was not played in 1917-18 due to World War I. In 1955 the format changed from match play to stroke play.
Pine Tree Country Club features an 18-hole, par 72 golf course designed by George W. Cobb. The course measures 7,036 yards and is located on 275 beautiful acres at the tip of the Appalachian Mountains. Numerous elevation changes, multiple doglegs and impeccably maintained 419-bermuda fairways and A1/A4 bentgrass greens, make Pine Tree an excellent tournament venue and a great place for members to play.
