Pro Turf International Completes Pond Renovation For Isleta Golf Club
Isleta Golf Club is a stunning 27-hole complex nestled on the edge of the spectacular Bosque along the riverbanks of the Rio Grande. This Albuquerque, NM, property features views that stretch as far as the imagination will allow.
There was one area of the golf course, however, that didn’t quite fit the majestic setting. On the sixth hole of the Lakes Course, a pond that once was a bunker defied the natural beauty of the routing.
“The No. 6 lake was giving us problems,” said Isleta General Manager Ramon Valdez. “It had been a large bunker, about 50 yards long, but the maintenance costs of keeping it up were too high. So we turned it into a lake, but it just didn’t fit properly and we were having trouble with the lining. So we decided to redo the lake from scratch.”
Valdez called on Pro Turf International, an industry leader in golf course construction, renovation and maintenance, to fix the problem.
“To get the water level correct the club had to raise the lower end up, which created a worse look,” said Jeremie Smith of Pro Turf, who oversaw the project. “One of our jobs on that hole was to figure out a way to blend in the lower end to create a more natural look while keeping the water at the correct level.”
The first step was to reshape the pond, giving it a more natural look befitting of the rest of the golf course. Next they lined the pond with 60-mil high quality, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane, which is UV stable.
The final stage was to install landscape rock around perimeter of lake. Smith’s crew used Geo Grid to help hold the rock in place along the perimeter.
“We were very happy with the work Pro Turf did,” said Valdez. “They made the lake fit the curvature of the hole without any major renovation on the hole. They were really good with communication. They explained the processes as they went along and kept us updated on their progress. It was well done.”
The Pro Turf crew also renovated a pond on the third hole of the Mesa nine, utilizing the same methods to reach a similar goal.
“Our crew did a fantastic job in shaping out the features of the two ponds,” said Smith. “They now fit the natural beauty of the courses.”
Pro Turf called on its vast experience in pond re-shaping for this project. The company had completed similar work at such courses as Desert Canyon Golf Club in Fountain Hills, AZ and Robson Ranch in Eloy, AZ.
With over 30 years of serving the Southwest’s golf industry, Pro Turf has been a constant in all areas of construction, renovation and maintenance in states like Nevada, Arizona, California, Utah and New Mexico.
Earlier this year CEO Mickey Brown announced that company had consolidated all of its businesses under the Pro Turf International brand. Those individual businesses included Key Golf Management, a full-service maintenance business, BunkersPlus with its outstanding LineBacker bunker product line, Solutions 4Earth, fertilization products for the turf industry, and the construction and renovation business of Pro Turf.
