CARMEL, Calif. – The Preserve Golf Club, a highly regarded Tom Fazio Design rated by Golf Digest among America’s top 200 golf courses, is preparing for two prominent amateur golf events next month.
The 31st edition of the Stocker Cup, which honors the memory of Peter Stocker, a real estate developer who was one of the partners behind the creation of Santa Lucia Preserve, will be held Oct. 18 to 21.
Michael Jensen of Menlo Park, Calif., is the two-time defending champion. To view the full list of 2023 competitors, including rankings results and biographies, visit stockercup.com/contestants.
The 54-hole individual competition features a simultaneous best-ball event, similar to the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The 48 invited mid-amateur players are either paired with a single-digit amateur or can propose their own partner to be introduced and invited by the Committee.
The course will play at approximately 7,100 yards. This year’s event will feature “at-the-turn” scoring powered by Golf Genius, AmateurGolf.com, and the Northern California Golf Association. Those results can be streamed at stockercup.com starting Thursday, Oct. 20.
Near the end of October, The Preserve Golf Club will host the Cal Poly Invitational, featuring 15 top collegiate golf teams, including host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, last year’s defending champions The Ohio State University, as well as the University of California, UCLA, Southern Methodist University, Duke, and Oregon.
Ohio State team member and U.S. Amateur runner-up, Neal Shipley, will be in the field. With his outstanding performance in the Amateur, Shipley earned an invitation to the 2024 Masters and a berth in the the 2024 U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst #2.
The format calls for five-man teams with the best four scores counting toward the daily total. The teams will play 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 30, and another 18 holes the following day.
“We are delighted to host both of these prestigious tournaments at The Preserve Golf Club,” said Riley Ramones, head golf professional. “With our course meticulously prepared and in impeccable condition, we eagerly await the arrival of these exceptional amateur and collegiate competitors.”
The Preserve Golf Club is located within Santa Lucia Preserve, a private community of fewer than 300 homesites situated on 20,000 acres. Located on the southern ridge of Carmel Valley, the course reflects the contours of the natural terrain that surrounds it: the Santa Lucia Mountains, mature oaks, grassy meadows, and flowing streams. In typical Fazio fashion, there are plenty of strategically placed deep bunkers, fast greens, and challenging approach shots.
Santa Lucia Preserve is the only community in America with a perpetually endowed, 18,000-acre nature conservancy. In the heart of the Monterey Peninsula, it provides its residents and members with a range of recreational opportunities second to none, while offering a unique ethos of community, culture, and conservation.
