LAS VEGAS, NV – PTI Golf recently completed a bunker renovation project on Spanish Trail Country Club’s Canyon Course that on the surface seemed to be your normal, everyday maintenance operation.
However, there was more to this story.
PTI and Spanish Trail used this project as a test lab for a bunker-liner product called StaLok. And now that the dust – and sand – has settled, the results are in.
Sta-Lok passed with flying colors.
“We are very happy with StaLok,” said PTI’s Director Of Agronomy George Folopoulos. “It’s very easy to install, and so far it has provided a sturdy and flexible bunker base.” PTI Golf is the golf course maintenance company for Spanish Trail.
StaLok waterless technology transforms natural crushed stone into a unique natural bunker liner. Patented polymer technology gives the bunker liner increased strength for great traffic resistance. But while doing this, the product also maintains a degree of flexibility, preventing the material from becoming too rigid like concrete and other chemical liners. Its unique surface characteristics resist weathering from water. StaLok simply needs compaction to activate, saving time and water during installation, without fabric or staples to get in the way.
StaLok is the product of Stablilizer Solutions, a family-owned company based in Phoenix. The company exists to advance natural alternatives to concrete, asphalt, and other artificial surfaces for athletic, equestrian, pathway and landscaping projects. The company has one focus – stabilizing the performance of natural soils where greater performance is demanded.
“They’re trying to get their foot in the door and wanted to do a sample bunker for us,” said Folopoulos. “I had two bunkers that wouldn’t drain water, so we decided to rip it all out and put in StaLok. I really didn’t know what to expect when I saw the pile of material. Traditionally bunker liners are rolled in or laid down. But with this, all you have to do is put it in the bunker and compact it.
“It must be a good product. They use it at Pebble Beach.”
Stabilizer Solutions is owned by brothers Jim and John Hubbs in Phoenix. They also have plants in Texas and Colorado, and ship their product everywhere. Their main business is outside of golf: major league ballparks, horse racing tracks, national parks and much more. They are starting to make inroads into golf courses with their decomposed granite product, from bunker liners to cart paths to tee boxes.
Don Davis has worked for the company as an independent sales representative since 2020. Before that, he was a satisfied customer.
“I was the golf course superintendent at The Rim Club in Payson, Arizona, and started using the company for our cart paths there,” he said. “Then I tried the material on a tee box that seemed to wash out every other week. That was in 2010, and that tee box is still there today. Eventually they introduced the bunker liner, and we put it into 74 bunkers while I was there. It is a great product.”
Davis enjoyed working with PTI Golf at Spanish Trail, and hopes to do more with them.
“I think it went very well. PTI was great to work with. They had everything ready to roll when we arrived.”
