TAMPA, Fla. – For the first time since his tragic passing on October 25, 1999, more than 200 items from three-time major champion Payne Stewart’s personal golf collection, were auctioned online by The Golf Auction based in Tampa, Florida.
Coming directly from Payne Stewart’s family and his widow Tracey Stewart, this was the very first opportunity for worldwide collectors and fans alike to acquire a few items from the Hall of Famer’s passionate and colorful career.
The record-setting bidding on 800 plus lots ended at 9:00 pm on Sunday, March 14, 2021 with extended bidding lasting well past midnight. Among the hot sellers were Stewart’s 1999 U.S. Open contestant’s badge from Pinehurst that sold for $37,290; an autographed white flat cap for $4,593 and a pair of Stewart’s personal blue and yellow knee-high argyle tournament socks for $3,215.
“Over the years so many people have reached out to share how much Payne impacted their lives or the lives of their loved ones,” said Tracey Stewart, Stewart’s widow. “I was pleased to share these items as a reminder of how much Payne enjoyed golf, but even more, how much he enjoyed people. I hope these treasured mementos will inspire their new owners in the same way Payne lived his life.”
The Golf Auction’s next auction will begin on Friday, March 26 and closes on Masters Sunday, April 11. In honor of the 50th anniversary of his 1971 Masters victory, the Golf Auction will be showcasing the personal collection of 15-time Tour winner, Charles Coody. More than 150 items will be featured from the Charles Coody collection along with additional Masters memorabilia and collectibles.
“This will be the third personal player collection that we will be auctioning this year,” said Brad Roberts, Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Consignments. “In February, we auctioned U.S. Open champion Steve Jones’ collection, followed by Payne Stewart and now Masters champion, Charles Coody. Golf memorabilia continues to grow in popularity and value, and we’re delighted about the growth of our company and the trust that collectors and bidders have placed in us.”
Registration is free and now open for the April auction online at www.thegolfauction.com.
