(LINCOLN, Neb.) – Landscapes Unlimited has been selected to oversee an extensive renovation of Sherrill Park Golf Course No. 2 in Richardson, Tex., 30 minutes north of Dallas.
Central to the project is the remodeling of tees, fairways, bunkers and greens, and installation of a state-of-the-art irrigation system. Landscapes Unlimited and Greenscapes Six are collaborating closely on planning and construction of the layout originally designed by Leon Howard in 1980 and re-designed by D.A. Weibring and Steve Wolfard in 2021.
The course is Avid Golfer Magazine’s “most anticipated renovation” among the 76 public golf courses in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and was ranked the No. 4 public course by the Dallas Morning News. It is owned and operated by the City of Richardson under the on-site leadership of Head Golf Professional Ronny Glanton who’s introduced thousands of golfers to the game during his 40 years at the facility.
Despite Sherrill Park No. 2’s wide fairways and an abundance of scoring opportunities, trouble occasionally pops up on the 4,810- to 6,375-yard, par 70 No. 2 course. The opening hole requires a carry over a creek traversing the fairway to a severely sloped green that makes putts fiendish. At nearly 300 yards, the sixth hole is also bold with water left of the green and a huge bunker protecting it. The final hole, a par four, plays tough on approach shots facing scary greenside bunkers.
“Sherrill Park No. 2’s layout is interesting, fun and often shows relative bite to golfers of all skill levels,” says Larry Barefield, Senior Project Manager of Landscapes Unlimited. “Working alongside Greenscapes Six and its experienced team brings together a treasure trove of talent to lift No. 2 up to modern standards.”
More challenging than its sister track, Sherrill Park Golf Course No. 1 stretches from 5,010 to 7,016 yards. At Par 72, it’s especially known for the first hole that doglegs sharply to the right at 375 yards, and the monstrous 14th hole that plays into the wind with water along the right of the fairway and green.
