Rio Verde, Ariz. – Rio Verde Country Club’s Women’s Golf Association (WGA), in partnership with the Rio Verde 9ers golf league, raised $39,000 for The Sojourner Center through its fourth annual WGA Charity Event. The Sojourner Center, a Phoenix-based safe haven, provides shelter and support services to more than 60,000 adults and children affected by domestic violence.
The WGA’s Annual Charity Event included a golf outing and luncheon held on March 15th as well as an online auction that was open for one week. Money was raised through golf outing entry fees, the sale of silent auction and online auction items, cash donations, golf hole sponsorships and on-course contests. The golf event, which was promoted as “Women Helping Women – to raise funds in support of the oldest women’s and children’s home for domestic abuse victims, in the Phoenix Valley,” included 96 women playing at Rio Verde Country Club.
“The Rio Verde Community is proud to support the Sojourner Center and make a $39,000 donation,” said Judi Powell, chairperson for the 2022 Rio Verde WGA Charity Event. “And, through our Raise the Rose project we exceeded the sponsorship of a newly redecorated apartment for an incoming family. A special mosaic butterfly plaque will hang above the apartment’s door and read ‘Rio Verde Women’s Golf.’
The Sojourner Center was founded in 1977 in downtown Phoenix with a goal to provide a safe haven from domestic violence for women and their children in Arizona. Since its founding, Sojourner has transformed lives by providing shelter and support services to more than 60,000 adults and children affected by domestic violence. Annually, The Sojourner Center provides shelter service to an average of 1,000 individuals – approximately 50 percent are children and 48 percent of the children are under the age of 5. Services include emergency and transitional housing, children and youth services, a childhood development center and a pet companion shelter.
