Rio Verde, Ariz. – Rio Verde Country Club’s Women’s Golf Association (WGA), in partnership with the Rio Verde 9ers golf league, raised more than $33,000 for The Sojourner Center through its third annual WGA Charity Event. In addition, the Women’s Golf Association also donated 300-plus clothing items and seven boxes of children’s books to The Sojourner Center, a Phoenix-based safe haven providing shelter and support services to more than 60,000 adults and children affected by domestic violence.
The WGA’s Annual Charity Event included a golf outing and luncheon held on March 16th as well as an online auction that was open for one week. Money was raised through golf outing entry fees, the sale of silent auction and online auction items, cash donations, golf hole sponsorships and on-course contests. The golf event, which was promoted as “Women Helping Women,” included 115 women playing on Rio Verde Country Club’s two 18-hole golf courses.
“The entire Rio Verde Community stepped up to help The Sojourner Center,” said Laura Doerfler, chairperson for the 2021 Rio Verde WGA Charity Event. “The $33,000 donation is a 58 percent increase over 2020 and a 120 percent increase from 2019. The money raised will help eight to nine families for six months, which is truly life-changing!”
The Sojourner Center was founded in 1977 in downtown Phoenix with a goal to provide a safe haven from domestic violence for women and their children in Arizona. Since its founding, Sojourner has transformed lives by providing shelter and support services to more than 60,000 adults and children affected by domestic violence. Annually, The Sojourner Center provides shelter service to an average of 1,000 individuals – approximately 50 percent are children and 48 percent of the children are under the age of 5. Services include emergency and transitional housing, children and youth services, a childhood development center and a pet companion shelter.
“The golf event and success of the online auction could not have happened without the dedication of the Rio Verde Country Club staff along with the women (and a few men) from Rio Verde,” added Doerfler. “No obstacle was too big (and there were a few bumps in the road) for this amazing group of women.”
