312 girls and boys will compete at historic clubs in Rochester, New York
FRISCO, Texas — The Country Club of Rochester and Oak Hill Country Club’s West Course, both located in Rochester, New York, have been selected to host the 2028 Junior PGA Championships.
The 52nd edition of the Championships, one of junior golf’s major events, will feature 312 players—156 girls and 156 boys—competing concurrently in a four-day, 72-hole stroke play format.
The Junior PGA Championships are open to amateurs no older than 18 years of age on the last day of competition. All players qualify through a PGA of America Section Championship or are granted an exemption into the field.
The Junior PGA Championships annually spotlight golf’s rising stars, with many past participants achieving stardom on the PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour. Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas are among the past Boys division participants, while previous Girls Junior PGA Champions include Inbee Park, Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang.
“We are looking forward to bringing the 2028 Junior PGA Championships to these two historic New York courses with longstanding ties to the PGA of America,” said PGA of America President Don Rea Jr., PGA Master Professional and Owner/Operator of Augusta Ranch Golf Club (Arizona). “Both clubs have hosted some of golf’s elite events, with The Country Club of Rochester hosting multiple U.S. Women’s Opens and Oak Hill Country Club hosting four PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup. Both golf courses are classic designs by Donald Ross, and I know they will be a great test for the top junior golfers. I want to thank Visit Rochester for their significant support in bringing these Championships to Monroe County.”
The Country Club of Rochester dates back to 1895. Donald Ross, the distinguished golf course architect of his time, was engaged to set out a new 18-hole course in 1913 and he returned in 1931 to design essentially the course that is in use today. Robert Trent Jones Sr. added three new holes (5, 6 and 7) in 1960 and Gil Hanse completed a restoration in 2004, but The Country Club of Rochester still remains a Golden Age Ross design. The legendary Walter Hagen, a founding member of the PGA of America, grew up as a caddie at the club and later served as its Head Golf Professional in the 1910s. The Country Club of Rochester has hosted a number of prestigious national golf championships, including the 1953 and 1973 U.S. Women’s Opens. The course at The Country Club of Rochester is a par 70 featuring 6,610 yards of golf.
“It is an honor to serve as a host to the PGA of America, particularly for a tournament involving junior golfers,” said Country Club of Rochester President Paul Roland. “We are very proud of our great golf course and our club’s long history, and are excited to share both with the players, their families, and all those visiting our great city for this wonderful event.”
Oak Hill Country Club is a world-class private country club. Founded in 1901 and originally located along the banks of the Genesee River, Oak Hill relocated to its current location in a land swap with the University of Rochester in 1921. Just a pitching wedge from Oak Hill’s famed East Course, which has hosted four PGA Championships and the 1995 Ryder Cup, lies a second Donald Ross gem – the West Course. Virtually untouched since it was first designed in 1926, the rolling terrain, elevated greens, majestic oaks and forever fast greens make it truly “championship” in its own right. Oak Hill West is a par 70 featuring two par 5s and 6,735 yards of golf.
“Oak Hill Country Club is excited to partner with the Country Club of Rochester and welcome what will undoubtedly be a very talented group of men and women to compete in the Junior PGA Championships in 2028,” said Ron Pluta, Past President of Oak Hill Country Club who served as chair of the 2023 PGA Championship. “Rochester has a long and storied connection to the game of golf. Our community rises to the occasion when asked to host anything golf related, and we are proud to share a Donald Ross gem, our West Course, with these young amateurs pursuing their dreams of winning at the highest level.”
Visit Rochester, the official tourism promotion agency for Monroe County, is a supporting partner of the 2028 Junior PGA Championships and helped bring the event to Rochester. Visit Rochester builds and maintains relationships with hundreds of organizations and businesses in the community that work to attract visitors to Monroe County, in turn growing the overall economic impact of the tourism and hospitality industry in the county and the Finger Lakes region as a whole.
“Rochester is thrilled to welcome the next generation of golf’s rising stars to our community for the 2028 Junior PGA Championships,” said Don Jeffries, President and CEO, Visit Rochester. “Our community has a rich history of hosting championship level golf, and we are delighted to once again welcome the PGA of America back to Rochester. Events like the Junior PGA Championships affirm Rochester’s recognition as a premier golf destination. We look forward to welcoming players and spectators from across the country for the Championships. While in Rochester, we invite visitors to explore our vibrant culture, golf amenities and hospitality.”
“Monroe County is excited to be hosting the 2028 Junior PGA Championships at two iconic locations – Oak Hill Country Club and the Country Club of Rochester,” said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. “Our community has a rich history of supporting major golf tournaments and championship events, a deep passion for the game of golf, and tradition of supporting talented men and women golfers. The Junior PGA Championships showcase the next generation of golf’s brightest stars, and I am certain that these two locations will provide these young athletes with a challenging and championship-level experience unlike any other.”
The 2025 Junior PGA Championships will be held July 29-Aug. 1 at Purdue University’s Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana.
