DENVER PIONEERS START WITH A STRONG LEAD AFTER ROUND 1 OF THE 2023 ANUENUE SPRING BREAK CLASSIC AT KA’ANAPALI

March 28, 2023

UCLA’s Zoe Campos one stroke ahead after first 18 holes

Lahaina, Hawaii: The Denver Pioneers got off to a hot start today shooting a season’s best 275 (-13), nine shots ahead of Pepperdine 284 (-4) and 11 shots ahead of UCLA 286 (-2) during the first round of the 2023 Anuenue Spring Break Classic at Ka’anapali.  UCLA’s Zoe Campos is in the lead after today’s round of 66 (-6) and certainly contributed to her team’s third place start.

Campos is a sophomore at UCLA and made seven birdies and just one bogey on the par 3 8th hole.  She recorded four top-10 finishes in UCLA’s seven events this season and was recently listed on the “Annika Award Spring Watch List.”  As a 16-year-old, UCLA’s Campos competed in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and tied the low first round.

Denver’s Alyson Bean and Clara Gestsdottir both shot a season’s best at 67 (-5) and are T2 with Stanford’s Sadie Englemann.  In the 2023 Westbrook Invitational, Alyson Bean of Denver fired the low round of the event with a 65 and took home the Co-Individual Trophy, finishing at -9 for the event.  That was Bean’s first career win, but she’s in a good place heading into the final 36-holes at Ka’anapali to see if she can earn her second trophy.    Gestsdottir, a sophomore, had a clean scorecard today with five birdies, and comes to Denver from Kopavogur, Iceland. She is a member of the Iceland National Team and played for the U18 National Team in the European U18 Championships, Youth Summer Olympics and at Bueno Aires 2018.

Team Pepperdine was led today by Lion Higo (T6) and Yingzhi Zhu (T10) who shot 69 and 70, respectively. Maui-born Reese Guzman had a good showing at 73 (+1).  Also T6 with Higo was Carla Bernat and Matilde Innocenti of Tulane and Leia Chung of Boise State.

Gonzaga’s Quynn Duong made an eagle today on the par 4 13th hole with a chip in for two.  Duong shot 71 (-1) today and had tied the low round for her team with Cassie Kim.

About Kā’anapali Golf Courses

Built on 300 acres of land once home to Hawaiian royalty, Kā‘anapali Golf Courses present golfers with pristine conditions and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and West Maui Mountains.

Opened in 1962 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the par-71, 6,700-yard Royal Kā‘anapali Course features wide fairways and undulating greens which make it both distinctive and demanding.  The tournament-tested layout played host to the Champions Tour Kā‘anapali Classic for 14 years, Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf, the Canada Cup and LPGA Kemper Open, welcoming Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Fred Couples, Jan Stephenson, Betsy King and other legends.

Complementing the Royal Kā‘anapali Course is the modernized Kā‘anapali Kai Course, which hosted Golf Channel’s “Big Break Kā‘anapali” in 2008. Extensively renovated in 2005, the 6,400-yard, par-70 layout boasts an array of strategically placed bunkers, contoured fairways and resurfaced greens.

The Ka’anapali Golf Courses are managed by Indigo Sports, a Troon Company. For more information on Ka’anapali Golf Courses, visit www.kaanapaligolfcourses.com.
