DALLAS, Texas — The College World Golf Championships Foundation, Inc. proudly announces that Kurt Schuette has joined its efforts to establish a permanent home for the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, further strengthening the Foundation’s mission to elevate the pinnacle of collegiate golf.
A former golf coach at USC (1994-2015) Head Coach, Director of Men’s & Women’s Golf, Director of Facilities & Development, and Pepperdine (1988-’94) Men’s Head Golf Coach, Schuette returns to collegiate golf with a distinguished résumé and deep relationships throughout the game. He served as the tournament director for the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship at Riviera Country Club, gaining invaluable perspective from both the competitive and operational sides of hosting a national championship.
The Foundation’s vision is bold and enduring: to create a permanent home for college golf, underwrite the costs of the Championships, and elevate the events to LPGA and PGA Tour standards. Omni La Costa provides a championship stage uniquely suited to that ambition, a newly renovated Gil Hanse-designed course built with the Championships in mind, the ability for all teams and stakeholders to stay on site, an advantageous East Coast television window for broadcast, nearly perfect Southern California weather, and the extraordinary benevolence of the Rowling Family and Omni Hotels & Resorts.
Schuette’s synergy with that vision is immediate and meaningful.
“I’m thrilled that Kurt Schuette, the very successful former USC and Pepperdine coach, is getting back into collegiate golf,” said Coach John Fields, President of the College World Golf Championships Foundation and Men’s Golf Coach at the University of Texas. “His efforts, talents, and abilities will be central to the continued build of the College World Golf Championships Foundation. Kurt’s unique background, along with his leadership of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s National Championship at Riviera Golf Club, will add energy and credibility to our ultimate goal of making Omni La Costa the permanent site for the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships.”
In addition to his collegiate accomplishments, Schuette is the founder of Classic Golf Days, a premier golf and hospitality platform that curates elite golf travel experiences around the world. His work reflects a broader truth about the game, that golf connects people well beyond their college years, serving as a bridge to business, leadership, philanthropy, and lifelong relationships. That perspective naturally aligns with the Foundation’s goal of building not only a permanent championship site, but a lasting platform that engages the broader golf community in support of student-athletes.
The Foundation will lean on Schuette to help expand its presence in California, strengthen relationships across the golf industry, and call upon the greater golf community to help bring a permanent home for college golf to reality. By combining championship-level competition with world-class hospitality and long-term partnerships, the Foundation seeks to leave a meaningful legacy for the generations of student-athletes who play this great game.
As the Foundation advances this vision, it actively seeks support from grant-making institutions, individual donors whose lives have been shaped by the game of golf, and sponsor and brand partners who recognize the year-round value of aligning with the pinnacle of collegiate competition. The Foundation is committed to developing meaningful, sustained engagement opportunities that extend well beyond championship week, delivering visibility, hospitality, community impact, and long-term brand association. While the strategic plan is clear and momentum continues to build, bringing a permanent home for college golf to life will require the collective partnership and investment of those who believe in the power of the game and its lasting influence on student-athletes.
With Schuette’s passion, experience, and depth of knowledge, the momentum toward making Omni La Costa the permanent home of collegiate golf continues to build.
“I am thrilled to return to the collegiate and amateur golf world, something I have been passionate about for 40+ years. I am honored to have been asked by Coach Fields to get back in the arena and to assist CWGCF with their core mission of hosting a Tour caliber competitive experience at a neutral site, and to alleviate the expense and staffing issues of an individual university hosting the Men’s & Women’s NCAA Division I Golf Championships. I share the vision that this is a more sustainable model to have a permanent site at the Omni La Costa Resort to better promote collegiate golf in perpetuity. Through our annual fundraising and sponsorship campaign we hope to realize an enduring model in providing a first-class opportunity and experience for the entire amateur and collegiate golf world. We also envision this becoming a showcase for the golf industry and international workforce to recruit talented, aspiring, young men and women. I am excited to get going and to have a positive impact on young people’s lives in a sport we all love, appreciate, and cherish.” Golf On! ~Kurt
