(Denver, CO) GOLFTEC, the world leader in golf improvement and club fitting, released a video featuring Director of Teaching Quality, Brad Skupaka, busting the myth that golfers can simply fix their slice by opening their hips very quickly in the backswing.
“Opening your hips can really be hurting and the cause of your slice,” said Skupaka. “We wanted to spend a little more time on this subject than we normally get in a 30-60 second video on Golf Channel, and dig into the launch monitor and motion analysis data for a factual deep dive.”
In the video, Skupaka begins by talking about the popular opinion that opening up your hips quickly during the backswing, can fix a slice. Using GOLFTEC’s TECSwing teaching software and data from a launch monitor, he shares the facts – demonstrating how opening your hips can actually contribute to a slice by creating a swing path that is more out to in. For a habitual slicer, this can increase a slice dramatically.
Focusing on hip and shoulder turn numbers from TECSwing, Skupaka illustrates how closing your hips and pointing your tailbone at the target, promotes a swing that creates a draw, not a slice. Adjusting how much or how little, can be tricky. Skupaka recommends working with a local GOLFTEC Coach using a launch monitor and motion measurement to dial in your unique swing.
