Adaptive golfers Steve Doudt, of Pendleton, Indiana, and Max Togisala, of South Ogden, Utah, both used VertaCat vehicles in their respective high-profile competitions this summer.
The VertaCat is the innovative all-terrain mobility rider for paralyzed and challenged walkers and features cutting-edge technology and engineering prowess, allowing the rider to sit-to-stand, with zero friction.
Doudt joined a team of 16 golfers representing the USA in The Cairns Cup: Disability Golf Matchplay Event, in their exciting 12 ½ – 11 ½ victory over Europe. The competition took place at Cherry Creek in Shelby Township, Michigan, July 27-August 3.
“This year’s The Cairns Cup was the best yet,” exclaimed 56-year-old Doudt. “The venue at Cherry Creek was outstanding top to bottom. More importantly is the completion of the mission, which is to bring awareness to adaptive golf, worldwide. I made some forever friends this week.”
Doudt, who became a bilateral above the knee amputee from a motor cycle accident in 1992, rode the VertaCat in the three-day competition and raves about the vehicle for adaptive athletes. “The VertaCat was amazing! The confidence I had in knowing the power of the machine was always there, the battery lasting the entire round (7 hours), and the unit runs like a beast in some adverse weather conditions.”
On July 10, Togisala won the U.S. Adaptive Open in the seated category for the second straight year, using a VertaCat.
This is the second straight year Togisala has ridden the VertaCat in the U.S. Adaptive Open; each time coming out the victor in the seated category. This year’s U.S. Adaptive Open took place July 8-10 at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas.
Togisala carded six birdies for a 1-under 71 in the second round, giving him a score of 7-over in his three rounds. He beat Thomas Duffy, from Utica, Illinois, who shot 14-over, to earn his second straight medal in his category.
“Defending my title was really special for me,” said Togisala, who is paralyzed from the waist down after a ski accident in February 2022. “I was feeling all the emotions during that week and I’m glad that I was able to see my hard work pay off.”
The VertaCat was pioneered by ATINSPO, a company formed by Anthony Netto, Founder of Standup USA Inc., and Tim Nicholson, Founder of Actus, a longstanding manufacturing business. www.vertacat.com
“Anthony Netto has changed my life and adaptive golf,” exclaimed Togisala. “He has created an amazing machine that is so reliable, so I don’t have to worry about cart issues while playing. He is an amazing friend to me and my family. I’m so blessed to have Anthony in my life.”
The VertaCat, which debuted at the U.S. Adaptive Open in 2023, is noted for its unique ability to elevate golfers into a standing position, facilitating a more natural swing, which offers a multitude of advantages for mobility-challenged athletes. Its introduction marks a significant stride in accessibility and inclusivity within the realm of adaptive sports, exemplifying the unwavering commitment of its creators to empower individuals with diverse abilities.
