Historic Club Celebrating Centennial Anniversary in 2021
Waterloo, Iowa – Members of Sunnyside Golf & Country Club in Waterloo, Iowa, recently elected Christa Miehe as the club’s first-ever female board president. The historic selection is a sign of progress in a position typically dominated by men and comes as the club celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2021.
A Waterloo native, Christa and her family have been Sunnyside members for 10 years. She joined the club’s board in 2018 as a member of the membership committee, before moving into the role of board secretary in 2020. Her board leadership experience includes serving as a past board president for the Boys & Girls Club of the Cedar Valley, The Waterloo Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Junior League of Waterloo Cedar Falls. When not at Sunnyside or enjoying family time, Miehe works at the VGM Group, where she is president of Moxie, VGM’s full-service marketing agency serving clients across the country. As a member of VGM’s senior leadership team, Miehe helps shape the culture of the company, while sharing a passion for philanthropy in overseeing the VGM Community Giving committee.
“I strongly believe in giving back to the community,” said Miehe. “The opportunity to serve on Sunnyside’s board, and to serve as president are volunteer commitments that I am passionate about. I know that it takes a lot of work and effort from a number of individuals to make any organization successful. For 100 years, devoted and committed members have served on the Sunnyside Board of Governors so that our club would continue to prosper. I am proud to help carry forward that tradition, to do my part to ensure our club’s continued success. While we have had a number of women serve on the board over the years, I am exceptionally proud to be the first female president.”
Sunnyside’s mission of gender equality and women in club leadership positions didn’t start with Miehe. Tammy Green has been Sunnyside Golf & Country Club’s general manager since August 2020. As the previous events coordinator for two years prior, Green has been in the club and hospitality industry for nearly 20 years. She previously served as the programs director and membership director at the Seoul Club in Korea for almost 11 years and then spent several years at a course in North Carolina as events director before making her way back home to Iowa. She takes great pride both in connecting with her members as well as making magical moments that last a lifetime. Her leadership and innovative planning, along with a strong team are making waves that haven’t gone unnoticed.
“Sunnyside is a place that offers opportunities for all members to get involved, recognizing that women and men are both equally capable of providing leadership and giving back to the club,” added Miehe. “I am proud to help usher the club into a new century of membership. Sunnyside is a club that is relevant in today’s busy world, welcoming of all who want to belong.”
Sunnyside Golf & Country Club’s membership continues to grow with young working professionals providing the largest segment of growth. Club programming, recreational opportunities and social events have become more family-friendly, offering kids activities during club events so that entire families can come and enjoy together. The club prides itself on delivering top-notch programming for juniors, a total golf experience for the entire family, and an array of dining options for all palates. Club amenities include an 18-hole golf course, a virtual golf simulator, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis and pickleball courts, banquet facilities, and a fitness center.
