Sunset Country Club Redesigned and Rebranded as Quixote Club
Spence Golf Design Collaborates with Nicklaus Design
(Sumter, SC) — The dramatic redesign of Sunset Country Club by Spence Golf Design and world-renowned Nicklaus Design is worthy of a new name, Quixote Club, inspired by the character Don Quixote, a man who dared to dream the impossible.
“Our purpose is to connect, inspire, and change lives through golf,” said Greg Thompson, owner of the Quixote Club. “We are not only re-inventing and renaming this club, we are creating in a truly special golf experience.”
Thompson explained that proceeds from Quixote Club will be reinvested into Sumter STEAM Charter School. “Through membership sales and corporate sponsors, the Quixote Club’s goal is to elevate our community by providing a world-class education to the youth in our area.”
The collaboration between Spence Golf Design and Jack Nicklaus II of Nicklaus Design began with several on-site visits and the evolution of a new course routing.
“We are very excited to be a part of such a comprehensive renovation project,” said Jack Nicklaus II, President of Nicklaus Design. “When I saw the property and Greg shared the club’s vision, I couldn’t wait to get started on the design plans. The land we are working with is beautiful, and it is special to be part of a project that will reinvest in the community.”
Spence Golf will be doing the reconstruction and restoration of the golf course. The redesign will consist of a new main entrance, enlarging and adding ponds, and creating an expansive practice are. The entire back nine will be changed, in addition to significant alterations on holes 3, 4, 5, and 6.
“We understand that members will have to make a sacrifice during this construction phase,” said Thompson “But these changes will be worth the wait.” Among Thompson’s goals for Quixote Club are to achieve status among the top ten Top Ten Course status in courses in South Carolina and to host a LPGA tournament.
Over the next 11 months, a $13 million investment will be made to redesign the golf course and completely renovate the main clubhouse. Jeff Harbison, who designed the highly acclaimed clubouses at Congaree (Ridgeland, SC) and Diamond Creek (Banner Creek, NC), has been retained as the architect for the clubhouse.
