Scottsdale, Arizona – The October 2022 issue of Golf Course Architecture featured Ted Simons as contributor to the monthly MAIL BOX feature. Simons, President and CEO of Synergy Group Consulting, shared his insights entitled; “The Driving Range – forgotten land…or is it?”
“From years playing the game and being involved professionally in the development of the game around the world, the varied approaches applied to the driving range are interesting. As much as the industry points to the growth of the game and advancements in technology, most driving ranges remain an afterthought”, stated Simons.
Simons continues, “There are many magnificent driving ranges and practice areas around the world which will make one salivate! But truth be known, the driving range and practice area are the last piece of the puzzle. What becomes of this very expensive acreage? A range that could double as a polo field. An undersized tee-line. A practice green that mirrors the Himalayas. A few bunkers that get little use. The tide is shifting with an emphasis being placed on world-class driving ranges with and without ‘entertainment technology’, practice areas, and learning centers. This bodes well for the sustainability of the game.”
“What used to be a forgotten piece of the property is becoming a focus. Player and member attraction and retention plus improved revenues from increased range sales and hit bay rentals, food & beverage, pro shop, and instruction are welcomed biproducts of this new focus. Designing this integrated complex that addresses the requirements of the modern course and club takes a different type of experience. This is exactly what Synergy Group Consulting specializes in for clients in the US and internationally.”
