CASA VERDE GOLF CONDUCTS MAJOR TEE AND DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS AT SANDIA GOLF CLUB

Award winning Sandia Golf Club receives site-wide tee enhancements and drainage upgrade

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Scottsdale-based Casa Verde Golf was commissioned by Sandia Resort & Casino to undertake the overhaul of all the “island tees” on the resort’s award-winning golf course. The renovation included the re-establishment of all the original tee edges of those positioned within desert surrounds, commonly referred to as island tees.

“The ‘before-and-after’ of this scope is quite remarkable,” noted Jeff Schwinkendorf, Vice President of Casa Verde Golf. “Establishing a clean edge of turf within the native landscape creates not only a stark aesthetical improvement, but also reduces unnecessary maintenance practices.”

At Sandia, there are 43 individual tees positioned in the desert landscape and all of them were addressed. Once the original edges became properly reestablished, steel edging was used to wrap around the new tee surfaces to limit further migration of turf beyond that which was intended by the original design of the golf course. Upon completion of the edgework, new walk-up configurations, including pavers and new ground cover consisting of two different shades of decomposed granite were implemented on the award-winning Scott Miller-design.

Some of those awards include Golf Digest’s “Top 40 Casino Courses in America,” GolfWorld’s “Top 10 New Courses You Can Play,” Golf Inc.’s “Golf Development of the Year,” and Golfweek Magazine’s “Top 100 Best Resort Courses.” Since it’s origination in 2004, Sandia has remained in impeccable condition and consistently ranks amongst the “Best Course You Can Play – New Mexico” in Golfweek Magazine.

Casa Verde Golf also installed nearly 600 linear feet of 10-inch and 12-inch pipe, and tie-ins with existing drainage system, to better mitigate the conveyance of water traversing the site from the adjacent foothills. In years past, significant rain water and melted snow would careen through the site, often carrying sediment and other debris from upstream of the golf course, littering the fairway turf in its wake. Casa Verde Golf’s efforts were aimed at capturing enough of this water and piping it under fairways so that this undesirable byproduct would be avoided.
