132 Professional Female Golfers Compete in a Quest to Play in the LPGA
The ANNIKA Women’s All Pro Tour, the official partner of the LPGA’s Epson Tour, returns to Trophy Club, Texas this week for the Kathy Whitworth ‘88’ Golf Championship. The competition takes place July 17-20 and has been renamed for Kathy Whitworth’s 88 professional wins, the most of any professional golfer. Also new this year: it’s now the ANNIKA WAPT – in partnership with golf legend Annika Sorenstam and the ANNIKA Foundation.
The field consists of 132 professionals from all over the world. They represent the best of LPGA hopefuls, young women who desire to follow in Kathy’s footsteps by participating in a top-notch competitive environment.
“Kathy Whitworth was the greatest winner in all of golf,” says Kathy Whitworth ‘88’ tournament director Cathy Harbin. “Still, she had a humble beginning and that always motivated her to help others. Kathy loved the WAPT and the opportunity it provided young women to follow their dreams.”
Kathy Whitworth’s story is one that can and does inspire young golfers. A talented young athlete, Kathy nevertheless struggled during the early days of professional competition. When she found herself at a crossroads, her parents and a group of friends committed to giving her financial support for at least three years so she could concentrate on finding success. She did just that—and eventually became the first woman to reach career earnings of $1 million on the LPGA Tour
There are many opportunities (interviews and visuals) for news media to cover this tournament.

The Trophy Club Country Club has two courses: one named after Fort Worth golf legend, Ben Hogan, and the other after longtime Texas resident Kathy Whitworth. The lovely reception rooms at Trophy Club contain the majority of Whitworth’s impressive trophies, cups, and medals. During her playing career, Whitworth won 88 LPGA Tour tournaments, more than anyone else in the history of the LPGA or PGA Tours. Those 88 championships surpassed both Sam Snead and Tiger Woods, who currently have 82 wins each. She is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame.
