Gene Sarazen, “The Squire” Par Three Match Play Golf Championship Announces Venue for 2020 Championship and Congratulates 2019 Tournament Winner
SMITHTOWN, N.Y. – “The Squire” Par Three Match Play Championship in honor of Gene Sarazen is pleased to congratulate John Solensky of Amityville, NY as the Winner of the inaugural event.
Tournament Director, David Capo, of title sponsor Ships’ Hole Farm, explains “The majority of the golf community around the world had no idea Mr. Sarazen’s par three learning links course existed, it was a hidden gem. It has been our distinct honor to be associated with Gene Sarazen, his daughter Mary Ann and the Family as we introduced the course and inaugural event to the golfing public. We would like to thank the Sarazen’s, World Golf Hall of Fame, the PGA, and Board of the Smithtown Landing Men’s Club, about to celebrate it’s 50th year anniversary, for helping point us in the right direction as the event was being planned. It was a success”.
Contested on July 27th and July 28th, 32 amateur players tee’d off to compete for “The Squire’s” Flag. The unique nature of the tournament structure permitted players to use only 4 clubs during the match play championship – a putter, sand wedge and two clubs of choice.
The tournament was played as a handicap event by converting the players full home course handicaps into a par three 9-hole course match play venue.
David continues, “We were interested in seeing how the handicapping played out. The field was filled with players with skill sets from Scratch to a handicap of 22 playing 18-hole matches against each other – the youngest competitor being 16 and the oldest 83. The tournament committee was pleased to see that matches were very competitive throughout the championship. The handicap conversion chart proved to be fair as players expressed their opinion, both from non-winner and winner’s perspectives”.
On behalf of the Sarazen Family; Head PGA Course Professional, Henry Kilroy; Course Superintendent, Tim Shellhorse and Director of Golf and Tournament Host at Smithtown Landing Country Club, Michael Hebron, we congratulate all competitors in the event and look forward to next year, Spring 2020.
