As the 2025 hurricane and tornado season is now upon us, it is vital that city, state and federal governments stand ready to safeguard citizens from life-threatening lightning, high winds, and other severe conditions.
Many government agencies and businesses have relied on the nation’s oldest lightning and storm detection and prediction company, Thor Guard, Inc. (thorguard.com) of Sunrise, FL, as their weather safety partner.

Just recently, at the U.S. Open Golf Championship held at Oakmont CC in Oakmont, PA, the United States Golf Association employed the Thor Guard system. The USGA has been utilizing the U.S.- made equipment since 1995 to monitor, detect and warn players, attendees, media, vendors, and medical and law enforcement personnel of approaching lightning strikes. This year’s event was delayed a few times due to heavy rain, but no electrically dangerous weather conditions.
“We were pleased that at a sports event with worldwide attention, our system was used and prevented any weather-related injuries or deaths. In doing so, Thor Guard analyzes the earth’s electrical charge migration 170,000 a second, the same electrical fields that create lightning, severe storms and tornadoes. This data enables us to accurately and consistently advise our customer before one of these weather events occur near their facility,” Dugan explained.
The setup used at Oakmont CC comprised two lightning prediction systems and three weather stations with much of the apparatus on the roof of the clubhouse. Thor Guard’s chief meteorologist, Jake Swick, was the sole person responsible for monitoring conditions and reporting them to USGA tournament officials.
