Record-setting Performance at Torrey Pines Underscores the Power of Replaceable Spikes

Brentwood, TN. –  A record-setting performance at Torrey Pines delivered one of the most emphatic victories of the season on the PGA Tour, with the champion closing the week at a tournament-record 23-under par, the lowest winning score in the history of the Farmers Insurance Open.

Achieved through a dominant wire-to-wire display, the performance rewrote the tournament record books on one of the most demanding venues on the PGA Tour schedule. Torrey Pines once again tested every element of a player’s game, from high-speed tee shots to approach play from uneven lies, placing a clear premium on balance, stability, and traction underfoot.

That emphasis was reflected clearly across the leaderboard. An overwhelming 37 of the top 42 finishers chose replaceable spikes over spikeless or tennis-style footwear, reinforcing their continued importance when the margins are tight and conditions demand total confidence from the ground up.

Firm fairways, sloping stances, and constantly changing conditions created an environment where grip and connection to the turf played a decisive role throughout the week. As scoring conditions intensified, the ability to stay grounded through aggressive swings proved essential in separating the very best from the rest of the field.

Across the PGA Tour, a growing number of players have made the move back to replaceable spikes in recent seasons, citing improved traction, stability, and confidence particularly on demanding venues like Torrey Pines.

“Torrey Pines is a golf course that really exposes any weakness in footing,” said Joe Henderson, President of Softspikes. “When you’re swinging at speed on uneven lies and firm ground, traction isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s essential. Week after week, we continue to see the majority of the field trust replaceable spikes when performance matters most.”

As the season continues to build momentum, this week in California offered another clear reminder that when record scores are posted and championships are decided on elite layouts, replaceable spikes remain the trusted choice at the highest level of the game.

Tour players change grips and traction regularly based on course conditions, but amateur golfers rarely think about the impact wearing spikes has on consistency and distance. To achieve optimal performance benefits, golfers should be switching up their spikes every 15 rounds.
