The Kathy Whitworth ‘88’ is getting support from some powerful women.
Trophy Club community leaders –the mayor, a successful entrepreneur, and a retired business executive — champion the golf tournament planned for July. The ANNIKA Women’s All Pro Tour (WAPT), the official partner of the LPGA’s Epson Tour, will host the Kathy Whitworth ‘88’ event at the Trophy Club Country Club, from July 17-20, 2024. Approximately 100 young female professional golfers will aim to follow in Kathy Whitworth’s footsteps and gain entry to the LPGA.
Trophy Club Mayor Jeannette Tiffany says perhaps the most exciting part of this event is “giving the players a prestigious competitive environment and tournament to build their future in golf under the name of Kathy Whitworth, who will always be a champion in the heart and mind of Trophy Club.”
Business owner Erica Lynch agrees. “I think the tournament is a really phenomenal tournament,” she says. “I love the exposure it brings to those young women trying to make it up into the LPGA.” Erica’s Sofia Elaine Salon is also a sponsor of the Kathy Whitworth ‘88’ and she can see parallels between the competition and her business model. She hires young women, helps them launch their professional careers, and gives them the tools and support to achieve their dreams. My mother’s words to us growing up were “Anything you dream and you believe, you can achieve.”
Erica’s mother, Madeleine Gray, is a retired airline executive. Madeleine also supports the Kathy Whitworth ’88 along with her fellow members of Trophy Club Ladies Golf Association. “Last year when the Kathy Whitworth ‘88’ tournament moved to Trophy Club, we were very excited. Many of the LGA members hosted players in their homes and/or volunteered at the tournament. I think I can speak for the LGA members in saying we all support women in golf and want all professional women golfers to have as much opportunity as possible to succeed. Having this tournament in Trophy Club highlights the importance of professional women golfers for not just our Club community, but for all aspiring high school and college women.”
Like Madeleine Gray, Mayor Tiffany hopes to play in the Pro-am and is also hopeful she will be a host family, providing a home away from home for one of the competitors. She concludes: “I believe all of our residents are very proud to have a community wrapped around two championship golf courses which bring many visitors to our beloved town of Trophy Club.”
