Golf course architect Chris Wilczynski begins renovation at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club
Grand Blanc, Michigan – Golf course architect Chris Wilczynski of C.W. Golf Architecture, in collaboration with golf course contractor Eagle Golf Construction are continuing a phased golf course renovation program at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan following the completion of The Ally Challenge presented by McLaren, an annual stop on the PGA Tour Champions which concluded on September 15, 2019 at the storied Club.
Warwick Hills played host to the PGA Tour’s Buick Open for over 50 years. James Gilmore Harrison designed Warwick Hills’ original course, which opened in 1957. The following year it hosted the inaugural Buick Open, won by Billy Casper. The current layout is the product of a 1967-68 redesign by golf course architect Joe Lee. Tiger Woods won the last (and his third) Buick Open at Warwick Hills in 2009.
This phase of the renovation program begins with the enhancement of holes #12 and #14, two short par 4’s on the back nine. The work will include new forward tees to improve playability and fun, and new fairway bunkering to enhance the strategy, challenge and aesthetic of the holes. The new bunkers will be constructed in a manner to mimic the existing greenside bunkers and aesthetic vision of Joe Lee. “The fairway bunkers will be repositioned to be more visually appealing, to create more challenge for better players and to prompt average players to think more about tee-to-green strategy”, stated Wilczynski.
“We are excited to be working with CWGA and Eagle Golf Construction on the renovation of our golf course”, said Chris Kuciemba the Warwick Hills golf course superintendent. “This is a busy time as we begin a renovation project following the preparation and execution of The Ally Challenge. We have a great team and plan for this work. We are excited to improve our course and create an even better product for our members, guests and the PGA Tour Champions players”.
