Bainbridge Island, Wash. – Wing Point Golf & Country Club in Bainbridge Island, Washington, is the site this week for the 30th Washington Women’s Amateur, 14th Women’s Mid-Amateur, 24th Senior Women’s, and 10th Super Senior Women’s Amateur championships.
The four championships will take place concurrently, with the Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur being contested over 54 holes of stroke play on June 20-22, while the Senior and Super Senior championships consist of 36 holes of stroke play on June 20-21.
The Washington Women’s Amateur is the state’s premier amateur championship for women and traditionally attracts the region’s best players. Some of the players to watch this year include:
- Angela Zhang of Bellevue: Defending Washington Women’s Amateur champion; reigning WA Golf Junior Girls’ Player of the Year; winner of numerous WJGA and AJGA championships; qualified for the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open.
- Kennedy Knox of Normandy Park: 2021 Washington Women’s Amateur champion; 2021 WA Golf Women’s and Junior Girls’ Player of the Year; 2021 PNGA Junior Girls’ Player of the Year; rising junior on the University of Washington women’s golf team.
- Grace Lee of Bellevue: finished T4 in the 2022 Washington Women’s Amateur; rising sophomore on the Gonzaga University women’s golf team; placed 5th in the WCC conference championships and was named WCC Freshman of the Year.
The Women’s Mid-Amateur field includes:
- Jacqueline Bendrick of Mercer Island: Two-time defending Washington Women’s Mid-Amateur champion; reigning WA Golf Women’s Mid-Amateur Player of the Year.
- Marianne Li of Bellevue: 2016 Washington Women’s Amateur Champion; 2016 WA Golf Women’s Player of the Year
- Caroline Matelski of DuPont: Inaugural champion of the Washington Women’s Amateur (1994).
In the Senior Women’s Amateur field:
- Sandra Turbide of Maple Ridge, B.C.: Defending Washington Senior Women’s Amateur champion who also won in 2019.
- Kim Shek of Bellevue: Reigning WA Golf Senior Women’s Player of the Year; qualified for and played in the 2022 U.S. Senior Women’s Open.
- Sue Craven of Snohomish: 2021 Washington Senior Women’s Amateur champion; 2021 WA Golf Senior Women’s Player of the Year.
And among those in the Super Senior Women’s Amateur field:
- Sunny Sue Kim of Bellevue: Defending Washington Super Senior Women’s Amateur champion.
- Karen Madison of Spokane Valley: Two-time Washington Super Senior Women’s Amateur champion (2016, 2021); 2015 WA Golf Senior Women’s Player of the Year.
- Sue Ursino of Sammamish: Three-time Washington Senior Women’s Amateur champion (2003-2005). 2018 Washington Super Senior Women’s Amateur champion.
The Women’s Amateur, Women’s Mid-Amateur, Senior Women’s Amateur, and Super Senior Women’s Amateur are four of the 14 championships conducted annually by WA Golf.
