Team ASU takes the lead after round 1 at Ocean Course Hokuala
[Hokuala, Kauai] Today at the Ocean Course Hokuala, Texas State player Mattingly Palmer achieved a remarkable feat, setting a new women’s course record with a stunning 66 (-6) during the first round of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Collegiate Invitational. Palmer, a junior competing as an individual, demonstrated exceptional skill with eight birdies on the 5,929-yard layout, accompanied by only two bogeys. Palmer won her first collegiate event during the individual championship at the Texas State Invitational during her 2022-23 college year.
In team standings, Arizona State University (ASU) displayed exemplary teamwork, shooting an impressive 280 (-8) collectively, securing a one-shot lead over defending champion Sac State, and a two-shot advantage over University of North Carolina (UNC) (-6). Leading the charge for ASU was Patience Rhodes, whose outstanding performance yielded a score of 68, highlighted by two eagles, two birdies, and two bogeys. Notably, teammate Ashley Menne contributed to the team’s success with a score of 69, featuring four birdies and one bogey.
Ella Kraft of Sacramento State also showcased her prowess with a score of 67, achieving six birdies and one bogey. Kraft’s teammates Caitlyn Maurice and Sneha Sharan stand at T17 with scores of 71 (-1). Sac State recently finished 9th during the Juli Inkster Invitational.
UNC remains in contention, trailing by two shots, with Megan Streicher delivering an impressive score of 67 (-5) and Kayla Smith posting a score of 70. Streicher shares the T2 position with University of Washington’s Camille Boyd and Sac State’s Kraft.
Rounding out the top performers, ASU’s Ashley Menne, Long Beach’s Madison Le (individual), Rutgers’ Lorena Rossettin, and Amelia Garibaldi finished the day tied for sixth place.
University of Hawaii (host school) coach, Julie Brooks, comments, “Hokuala features some spectacular views and some challenging holes. I think the course is set up perfectly for scoring.” Hawai‘i’s low round came from Emiko Sverduk who shot 75 (+3) today.
