Fresno State Golf Coach Recipient

FRESNO, Calif. – Running Horse Golf & Country Club announces its first honorary club membership in tandem with the long-awaited announcement of offering memberships to the premier gated golf community in the San Joaquin Valley.

"As a Fresno State alumnus, I truly believe in this project and its strong future. Granting this membership not only strengthens an already powerful program, but it also leaves a legacy to use for many years to come," said Running Horse managing partner Tom O’Meara.

Mike Watney is the current head coach of 27 years for the FSU Bulldogs golf squad. "I am very excited for this opportunity for my team and the university. I had a great experience walking the Running Horse Golf & Country Club course layout with Jack Nicklaus II and the Nicklaus Design team and saw firsthand the tremendous enthusiasm in this development and how far it has come in such a short time. I am honored to have the opportunity to use this during my tenure to help our current team, our future recruiting and as a huge benefit to the university and the community."

During Mike Watney’s reign as the FSU head coach, he has turned success into a tradition for the men’s golf team. From winning conference championships to coaching All-Americans, Watney has established Fresno State as a nationally prominent, highly competitive golf program. Throughout his time at Fresno State, Watney has tutored 29 All-Americans, including his nephew Nick Watney, a three-time All-American and a newcomer on the PGA Tour who won the 2004 Nationwide Tour Championship.

Mr. Watney has been a member of the PGA for 18 years and has numerous coaching honors. In 2002 he was named the Southwest Region Coach of the Year. In 1996, 2000 and 2003, he was honored with WAC Coach of the Year. He earned Big West Coach of the Year honors six times in the 1980s and was named NCAA District VIII Coach of the Year for the first time in 1987, and then again in 1994.
